I am always browsing the internet since I am limited on what I do. I recently discovered that one of my ShopNotes PDF files was damaged. I have been told that ShopNotes is no longer in publication so I figured I could find a copy of my original files on eBay or something.

Well I came across a site that advertised ShopNotes complete collection series. Firefox prompted me that the site is to be untrusted and I damn near did not proceed but I remember that Firefox also told me that Lumberjocks website was untrusted before also. With that thought I added the exception to my Firefox browser and continued.

To my surprise the site does have the entire ShopNotes collection, Volumes #1-Vol 1 thru #95-Vol 16!!! I just thought I’d share with all the other lovers of this grand old magazine…

I was not aware of ShopNotes being out of publication. I have the Shop Notes on flash drive collection as of 2013.

IF you are a valid Shop Notes DVD / Flash drive owner, you can get online access to the library for no charge…

Well dbhost, If you mean valid as in buying it via their magazine website then no I am not. I purchased my collection via eBay. As far as them stopping their magazine goes, I believe it was here that I read it on someone eles’s post/blog.

A letter received by a friend:
Thank you for your 2 yr ShopNotes subscription. Due to business realities we have decided to cease publishing ShopNotes beginning next year. Rather than send you only one issue and then stop, we have canceled your order and your credit card will not be charged. We are sorry for any inconvenience that will be caused. We still offer all 138 back issues in our online back issue library as well as DVD, we just won’t be publishing any new issues. We plan to expand Woodsmith to include some ShopNotes content beginning next year. We’re sure you will like the changes in store for upcoming issues of Woodsmith magazine.”

abie, I just looked for a way to order the magazine online & their “Current” issue is November 2014. Also I found where I read it awhile back. It was on sawmillcreek’s website & not here on LJ.

ShopNotes has been discontinued.

Going to a Russian IP address to download the content, outside of copyright, probably contributes to ShopNotes not being around anymore, and delays their (possible) resumption.

Although ShopNotes is no longer a currently published magazine, the parent company owns the copyright to all the previously published issues of the magazine and markets them as a collection on dvd or accessible over the web. By downloading a copy of the magazine from a pirate site is quite simply wrong.

I seriously doubt it caused to shut down or even cost them one red cent. This argument has been going on for 20 years & has gotten way out of hand specifically in regards to federal law stating that if you own a CD/DVD and allow your child to play it in their personal player then you have violated U.S. copyright statute. That is pretty pathetic in my own opinion. That is like saying the $40,000 truck I buy cannot be loaned to my son to use because I am costing Ford, Chevy, Dodge or Toyota to loose revenue.

Come to think about it, I have loaned my ShopNotes magazines to my son & brother to take home & read so I suppose I contributed to the publication closing shop. ” I stand Guilty as charged!”

IF someone is going to download or stream any content with the intent of doing so to just keep from spending their money then they would not spend it to purchase a ShopNotes magazine in the first place. Thus the reason I say that it did not or does not effect the publishers bottom line. Nor would it prevent any recovery and or possible resumption of the same.

It is an old argument as I mentioned and I’ll not say much more just to carry it on. One can choose to go to the site or not. My intention by posting it was for others that may have lost their data for what ever reason, and replace it. It’s not like one can get one from ShopNotes.

But the point is that you CAN still purchase the magazine back issues. The entire library is accessible for $79.

No, it’s not…

It’s more like you loaning the truck, and after you get it back, he keeps a fully functional, identical copy. He can then make identical copies of the truck for others, for free…

This is super easy to understand for anyone who has done honest work creating intellectual property, like software, music, a design, or written prose. With regards to that, there’s a huge difference in loaning a book, magazine, or CD to someone else to use and then return, as a library would, and the other person making a free copy of the work to keep for themselves.

Some of ShopNotes projects are incorporated into each Woodsmith issue.

ShopNotes magazine is no longer being published. I was offered to move the remainder of my subscription to the Woodsmith subscription.
