Project Concepts

Hello everyone. This is my first post to Lumberjocks. I have been looking at this site for some time now and finally decided to join and show my projects and concepts. My first blog will be about concepts. I come up with several different concepts but i don't know if my ideas are good ideas or I am just over looking something.

First one i want to blog about will be my Patio table concept.

Rectangle Wood Font Parallel Pattern

This table is designed with using western red cedar 1×4's. My idea is to use 1×4's for the tops with a routed 1/4" lip for the tile to sit on. The support will be 1×3's creating a boarder with 1×3's supports running along the width. The legs will be made up of four 1×4's glued together. The legs will be attached to the 1×3 support boards.

I will appreciate any all input on my design. Thanks for looking at my blog.

I would check on the tile u wanna use before hand, cause most "12inch" ceramic/slate/marble, etc tile isnt exactly 12' Iv seen em as small as 11 3/4" which when shared with a gout line they come out 12". Maybe im wrong but i would still check it out…

Also think about the weight of that table top. Make sure the legs are spaced to allow and built in a way to support a heavy top. Western Red isnt that dense or heavy of a wood, so the legs mite not stabilize the top.

I have a similar design in my notebook. I was planning on 1/2" lip to hold the tile and I was planning on using Lyptus. The 1/4 ' Cedar LIP may not be strong enough. Otherwise, the design looks good. I have done granite slab tables for the patio. I used Lyptus and found the finish to be hard to preserve in the sunlight. Unfinished Cedar sounds like a good choice.

It looks like a very viable plan. I'd definitely purchase the tile first and give it a good measure. Give a gap for wood movement and it looks like a fine project. It's going to be a challenging glue-up, so you might want to rehearse it a bit. Good luck!

vanity table

Hello and thankyou for visiting my blog.

This project came about when my wife got pregnant and got tired of sitting on the floor in front of a tall mirror to put on her makeup. She asked me to do it for months before she got pregnant but never got around to it. Now it is getting to a point where she really needs it.

I have seen several vanities on the internet and when she asked me to build one, this is the style I envisioned on building. It is a standard vanity table with queen anne legs. This was going to be my first attempt at building a drawer and I was wanting to try out some new joinery techniques. I was going to use this as in excuse to buy a dovetail jig, but that idea got quickly shot down. Then I decided to do finger joints. And to do that i was going to have to build a jig cut the joints. She said that would take too long and I told her you can't rush my work. In the end I couldn't find my queen anne legs in my price range and this project was starting to take too long. So she just wanted me to throw something together with the wood that i have on hand. So I built her a birch plywood vanity for the time being. I dont have a picture of it right now but I will take one and upload it here soon. I am still planning on building this vanity table. But now I have more time to design it and work on my jigs.

Thanks for viewing my blog. Any feed back is greatly appreciated.

Jewelry mirror

Rectangle Handwriting Font Line Parallel

My wife is needing a place to put all of her jewelry at, and she loves to look at her self in the mirror. So I came up with this drawing for a 2 in 1. This will be similar to a medicine cabinet except the insides will be designed for jewelry. I dont know if I want to use all wood or buy metal hooks for necklaces. And I am needing help with the ring holders. I was thinking about 1/2 inch foam rounded over with felt over it to keep the rings from falling out. But then I thought that foam would quickly loose its grip due to the type it is. I was going to use insulation foam that you get at lowes. Then I thought about 1/2 inch plywood wrapped in a rubber like material. This maybe be too stiff to get the rings in. I dont want to buy the piece. So does anyone have any suggestions for me?

You have probably completed this project or abandoned it by now, but here goes my totally untested idea that will probably need some testing to perfect.

I've never made anything to hold jewelry, but I believe that I would use a firm grade of foam rubber, similar to the material used for mouse pads [The ones that are about 3/8 inches thick]. I might even use an old mouse pad for this. I'd cut a strip around 1 1/2 inches wide and as long as needed. I'd then fold it over in a tight "U" shape and wrap it in felt. Then repeat that process several times and butt the covered pieces inside a frame with their long sides touching. Rings and similar pieces of jewelry could then be pushed in between the pieces.

Tried to send you a message, but since I have not completed 5 posts yet, I am not allowed. [I've only been a member for 1,721 days]. We are very close together geographically. I have an Owensboro mailing address, but live outside of the city limits off of State Route 54, fairly close to Philpot.
