2010 has so far been an amazing year for my studio. Not only have I been in my most prolific stage since College, I have also been expanding to become a real business and educational resource.

For my Christmas (birthday and anniversary) present from my Partner was a 16” Jet Bandsaw. I was elated since my other one died about 3 years ago.. hampering many projects in process. To celebrate the newest addition to my studio, I revamped my whole workshop… updated to be able to tutor the growing number of people interested in me teaching woodworking and artisan crafts.

February I had my first studio open house party, displaying my work and portfolio our gallery space and works in progress out for presentation. The reception was great, allowing people to see I am more than woodworker, more than Illustrator.. more than an Industrial Designer. Lots of interest in my work… lots of talk… time to turn talk into success.

So, I hired my first employee to help me coordinate the business side of my studio.. and she loves to woodwork as well, so the Flower Tables are going into show rooms asap. Strange feeling to hire someone in the capacity that I was in search of for myself… not 5 months ago. My how things change quickly. I feel good that I am helping someone survive in this economy.. and pissed off that if I… a solo poor artisan… can give help where other woodworker businesses in Chicago won’t. Mostly due to the many woodworkers out there hold to the selfish and competitive 1950’s standards of work and employment… Industrialized Craftsmen I call them.. more interested in the market.. their tools and their money… than for the culture and society of Woodwork and Artisans on a whole. Most of us know woodworking won’t make us millionaires… let stop treating the business as small corporations. Start seeing is it people making things of longterm value for other people.

I have started an open studio policy, and I teach cognitive thinking in art and design… how to control and make their world through skill and knowledge and passion. ~ e
