Shakes itself to pieces in a very short time
Price $29.95 via Amazon. The price fluctuates with what package of attachments come with the sander. The search for a reasonably priced finish sander continues… I had hoped this little unit from Black & Decker would hold up for a while and I would get some good use out of it. I was disappointed. First, the “Zone Touch” feature is worthless. There is an indicator light that tells you when too much pressure is being applied. This light comes on red when the unit is f...
A box book first, an inlay book second. Either way, well worth a look.
Price $16.49 via Amazon. Amazon also sells used copies through its affiliates and Half.com may have it for even less. Doug Stowe definitely knows his boxes. He’s built thousands of them over the years. Anytime an expert like this decides to share his secrets I try to pay attention. The focus on “Inlay” is a fuzzy one at best. Stowe talks in detail about how to make inlay strips and panels and for that information alone this book is worth its price. A true artist should...
A strong follow-up to Ventura's first band saw book
Price: $18.24 at Amazon. Buying used or from Half.com (thanks Jim) might help you find it cheaper. Like many here at LJs, I throoughly enjoy making band saw boxes. My first inspiration for these was Lois Keener Ventura’s “Building Beautiful Boxes with your Band Saw” book. This is a “sequel” to that first book. I’ll be hunting that review down and posting for that one later on as well. I have posted a bunch of reviews on Amazon and am migrating the woo...
A simple yet extremely helpful item
Price $5.99 for a 10 pack via Amazon I have done a ton of reviews on Amazon and realized that the folks here at LJs will probably put more of the information to use than the average Amazon user. So, I’m transferring a bunch of these reviews over here for you folks to use. My intent isn’t to flood the site with reviews so if someone has a concern with a couple going up each day, let me know. For as long as people have been working with wood they have been frustrated by either...
A surprisingly flimsy tool from INCRA--Not recommended
Price $36.99 via Amazon and Rockler Coming from a company like Incra I expected this item to be one top of the line rule. I was wrong. Throw in the excessive cost and in my opinion we have an item that can be passed over for something better. The measurement increments are accurate and as specific as can be. However, this rule is stamped from very flimsy material that easily bends and gets pulled out of alignment. This defeats the point of this item since it is designed to sit alont the...
The Soul of a Tree: A Master Woodworker's Reflections
Author: George Nakashima$31.68 as of this writing at Amazon Given the price of this book I feel strongly that you should know that this is not a woodcrafting book with plans and designs. This book, written by Nakashima himself, is a great overview of a great career and a wonderful talent. The first half of the book is especially enlightening. It is a short biography of Nakashima’s early years and shows how these experiences directly influenced his works. When I first saw the book I t...
The "All-Inclusive" book on the topic of dust control
Author: Sandor Nagyszalanczy$14.93 at Amazon as of this writing Ok, you’ve got to be getting pretty specific if you are looking at buying a book solely written about what is technically a huge vacuum cleaner! However, as woodworkers, we should all be concerned with doing it healthily for ourselves and anyone else in our shops. If you need this information it is a good thing that someone has compiled this book for you. Sandor does a great job of taking this topic and logically cove...
If you sell, you should really take a look at this book
I have accrued a lot of woodworking books over the last 3 years or so and avidly read as much as I can about my favorite hobby. I occasionally sell some pieces so got hold of this book. This book is available at Amazon for $15.63 as of this writing. The author is Dan Ramsay. First off, not everyone needs this book. If you enjoy woodworking for the relaxation, the craft, or as gifts, you don’t need this book. If you are actually trying to make a profit or are seriously considering ...
