Pin Hinge / Column Hinge advice for small box - 5 replies

I’m sketching out some ideas for a box that I’d like to make for my wife. She wants a new sewing box and was talking about having multiple small trays instead of one large cavity. I was thinking that I might make something like a stackable Bento box but with the trays connected to each other on a vertical hinge so that any of them...

Best solid wood to resist warping - 3 replies

I make these clamshell-style cases for my photographs from 5-ply Baltic birch plywood and lately I’ve been considering making them out of solid wood. The halves are about 4.5×5.5” CNC routed leaving an 1/4” thick top and 1/4” thick walls. Basically I hog out a big pocket/cavity so I can put the photograph inside ...

Gluing parts together after finishing? - 7 replies

I have parts that overlap and require finishing separately. Is it acceptable (and as strong) to glue them together after finishing or would I get the strongest result by gluing before finishing? I’m planning to use titebond III.

Silver/Gold Powdered Wood - 8 replies

Watching the Duke/Butler game last night I saw a commercial for some new Inifinti car. This kind of thing usually goes in one ear and straight out the other but the phrase “with silver powdered wood accents” caught my ear and I stopped playing with my new iPad long enough to finish the commercial. The commercial didn’t say ...

Cool festival coming to North Carolina - 2 replies

I’m helping to plan this festival that’s coming to North Carolina on April, 25th and I thought that some of my fellow lumberjocks would enjoy attending and maybe even exhibiting. The Maker Faire:NC is a do-it-yourself festival where exhibitors teach and inspire rather than out-and-out sell their wares. Make n’ Take kinds of...

Humidor lining question - 2 replies

I am thinking about building a humidor in the coming months and I’ve been thinking about how I would build it. I know that I should use unsealed Spanish cedar as the liner but I have a couple of clarifying questions: 1. Is 1/4 thick Spanish Cedar appropriate? Thinner? Thicker?2. Would it be OK the glue the cedar liner to the exteri...

Compost Tumbler Design - 8 replies

I’m planning a single-drum compost tumbler that is similar to the one shown here http://www.instructables.com/id/Double-Decker-Drum-Composter/ What I would prefer to do is make an A-frame from 4×4s and a 2×6 crosspiece. The drum would be mounted on a pipe that would go through the 2×6 braces. I would prefer not to use...

Forrest Woodworker II - buy now or wait? - 15 replies

I’ve alluded before to the general crappiness of my table saw. The $125 Craftsman is useful and is good enough for the small tasks to which I award it but I’m getting frustrated with burn marks on hard woods. I plan to buy a new TS once I have room for it but this won’t be for years yet. I’m using the combination bla...

Power miter saw for box making? - 12 replies

I rather enjoy making boxes and when I don’t make box joints or ‘tails, I love a good miter. I have a table saw of ineffable crappiness that doesn’t actually bevel all the way to 45 degrees (almost though!) and little room for a new one so I was thinking about getting a really awesome dual-bevel compound miter saw. Do you g...

Woodcraft Burglar Caught (almost)... with GPS! - 5 replies

http://www.theindychannel.com/news/14195732/detail.html “Someone broke into the Woodcraft store in the Castleton (IN) area on Friday morning and stole woodworking tools. Rowland had placed GPS devices in some of the packaging.” Ha! What a smart owner! I hope they catch the guy!
