I picked this bench up off Craigslist for $10 wood was to far gone to save. Plan is to sandblast ends repaint them silver and do an American flag themed bench.

Part 2: Tried a cheap harbor freight sandblaster but it was a fail so I sent ends out!

After my harbor freight fail.. I found a local guy who sandblasted and primed the ends. Cost: $75 but came out very nice. I then sprayed them 3 coats of silver and 3 clear coats. My next step was to choose a wood? I planned this to be a very inexpensive project so after the expense of sandblasting I went with a very unpopular choice of poplar ($48).

Part 3: Bought a small craftsman router/table combo and a couple roundover bits.

I bought a router/table combo from sears ($100) and a couple roundover bits ($15 each). I rounded over the tops of all 13 slats then sanded them down. Then I dryfit them using 1/4 inch nuts as spacers. Had to drill new holes because most of the boards didn’t line up with current ones. Bought Ace hardware out of 1/4”x1.5” bolts nuts and washers for now (13). I’ll have to go back later for the rest. When all is said and done it will have cost me ($30)

Part 4: Torched the slats then sanded them down to 320 grit. Stained the red stripes

So I torched the slats in an attempt to make it look more rustic. Sanded them down to 320 grit. I found the poplar sort of burns blotchy or I’m just not too good at it yet. Had Hoe Depot mix up some blue and red stain for me. ($32) Also picked up oil based spa urethane high gloss (expensive.. but I told worth it.)I was able to get the union marked and taped and stained the red stripes! I think it came out pretty good. Cant wait to lay out the star stickers for the union. to b...

Part 6: First coat of spa urethane on!

First coat of spa urethane is on and taking a while to dry. Have to do the back, sand and then second coat. Should look good when complete!

Part 7: Final assembly bench is done!

So second coat of spa urethane went on. Final assembly done! Bench came out pretty nice for my first real wood project. I learned a few things along the way and picked up some tools
