AWFS Woodworking Show

I was able to visit this on thursday of this past week… what a blast. I was really there for a Real Estate Convention but snuck away from the MGM grand on thursday morning and visited the show till the evening… I will post a bunch of the pictures I took and some thoughts… the one real thought was… dang I wish I had more time for this. It is about like having half a day for disneyworld… Impossable.. overwhelming and totally fun. Next year it will be in Atlanta… I am planning to be there. Guys… for a hobbiest this was crazy. I actually spend a bit of time with my buddy Richard(Owns Timberline Tools which is for example the largest powermatic industrial distributor left of the mississippi) looking at CNC machines as he does’nt get much time to look at $120 to $300K machines side by side. They were nuts. Turning out mass produced cool furniture in no time at all. One company was making head boards in about 6 minutes that would take me 3 days to make. One could make a solid alder door in about the same time. The automated spray booths were nuts as well. One highlight was meeting Mark and Nichole Spagnuolo… how cool was that. I think Ill get a domino just cause he was working Festools booth… however much I dont like what the company did to my bud… I was not there for the “Unveiling” at the Delta booth but I think they rebadged everything. I did get to see the new variable speed drill press from them and may trade my new powermatic in… I also may switch my new Unisaw to a Sawstop… It was a cool event…

Woo Hoo... I am just about as excited about this as I am about my new Jointer...

OK guys… Buddies… Jockular types. First off I wan to clarify… I have just outfitted a new shop with all kinds of tools and toys. I am proud of it. I worked hard on it and I paid for the thing cash with money that I have saved up over the course of the past 5 years intending to get this shop running. I have made lists and reviewed tool purchases and crossed tools off my list as I have replaced them with new tools that have come out 2 and 3 times as the years have gone on getting ready for the day that I knew would come that I would have the place to have a shop.

These purchases (the tools) and actually the shopping for them have been very exciting for me. However some Jock on here has given me lotsa crap about what kind of flash in the pan kind of a guy I must be to on an apparent whim (in his mind) go and outfit a shop on a weekend. (total inaccuracy) I have new tools… some are replacements for old kick around contractor grade stuff (Table saw, Compressor, Drill Press etc) and some are new to me but used (Delta Thickness Planer, Delta Sanding Center) and some are brand new and have never been used and I have never used them and have no experience with them at all. (Powermatic PJ882 Jointer)

The thing is that someone on here messaged me with this “You flaunt the price of everything you buy and have. (I sort of have been as I have been trying to carefully spend my money and have been looking and focused on the deal) Everyone you even say hello to is all of a sudden your good buddy. (been trying to be friendly on here) You act like you know everything about everything and have no idea how wet behind the ears your posts make you look. (very possibly so… in many areas covered on this forum… I am super green… just not in every area) You’re the type that bursts into a room and is everyone’s pal and mentor, no matter how little time you’ve taken to develop those friendships. (Now how could someone know such a thing) I have met far to many used car salesmen (I think this is hurtful… to me and to used car salesmen) like yourself and quite frankly, they repulse me.”

This has made what for me has been a very exciting time kind of a downer… I have looked for those with my same interests in this sense to share this with (how often do you get to implement a dream you have planned for 5 years… and more importantly.. I know I am spending lots of money on woodworking tools. But… next month… a nice plane and wood for a project will be about all I can do on my hobby allowance as the budget will be spent.) I have very few people to share the excitement of creating this with. I don’t have many close friends who are woodworkers and interested in what I am doing. They could care less about a Jointer… Most have never heard of or seen one.

I was excited about putting together my dream shop and finding people to share this with but apparently have not communicated very well in that while I am somewhat green as far as many techniques go I am not totally new either thus while I don’t have projects I am excited about to post (cute jewelry boxes and the like.) My current project is the shop itself. I think sometimes I can add to others benefit. I may be a little rusty on my marquetry… but I know a little about cabinet making and do know that getting a new PJ882 for $1000 is newsworthy.

Well this was not the intent of the post… what I was going to say… (but had to preface with this multi paragraph explanation as I am paranoid about getting posts from someone about blabbing about what I purchased) Is this… I am very excited about my most recent acquisition! I got a lot on ebay that included the following magazines (and if I dare mention price I will say that i got them for less than $1 each!!! So Wooo Hoo… I am literally checking on the tracking every day…

Wall Storage... #1: I am getting to the point in the shop where I need to start thinking about hand tool storage...

In my shop I have built storage shelves for the top corners so as to handle the requisite house storage that necessitated or I should say allowed me to build the shop (Wife’s permission and all) and am just getting to the point where I need to start thinking about either building a fold out tool cabinet or putting some store wall or pegboard on the wall over the bench to hold frequently used hand tools and I could use some input. The workbench will be on large casters and is 36 inches wide but I am pretty tall and have long arms so I think Ill be able to reach… I do have a large mechanics tool box adjascent to the bench and will have a lower shelf for power tools… This needs to be able to hold chisels, planes, screwdrivers, sandpaper cubby, etc…

Thanks in advance…

Drew

P.S. I am pretty visual… if you have pics you can post to your workshop blogs and direct me there that would be awesome…

I think it is important enough to enough of us that I wanted to share. I would suggest that you guys mention this to them when you call so we can get him on here as an advertiser and have his support for the site… Anyhow, Richard who is my buddy has the Utah Woodturners Association there at the store last night and he announced to them that he had swung a deal with Delta to buy I think it is the LS200 model of the Midi Lathe with them for a couple of school districts in Utah. He got an entire container full. He has about 60 left after the wood turners got 40 of them left over after selling the schools 500. He can sell the lath for $129 each. Now if you look for it on Amazon it is like $270. More than that till the end of the month there is a rebate for 6 chizels from them that normally cost $130 by themselves. They are free with a mail in rebate. Needless to say… I have one myself. Call them and tell him Drew sent you from Lumberjocks and lets get them to participate with us.

I was very excited abotu getting some Maple raw and going through the process of sawing it and then stacking and tarping it for a year and then making furniture out of what I had cut from a tree… the entire process has been a kind of dream of mine for years and then a fellow LumberJock posts that he has some maple trees we could pick up… I was very excited and had been planning to pick up a couple of trailers full… I have a buddy who was game for the drive with another trailer and truck and we calculated several times the costs and then we thought… We better talk to our other buddy who forgot more about woodworking last months than I know.

So we went over to his house… He is an owner of TimberlineTools.com and he said guys I can get the really good stuff for you (totally clear Maple both sides) all we want for $3.09. But then we got talking some more and we go to church together and stuff and he walked us out to a container he has out back and opens it up and it is absoultley filled to the top with highly figured hard maple. Spalted, Birdseyes you name it. They like that stuff and get it after it has been culled once for the perfectly clear stuff by a huge kitchen cabinet molding shop and then before Timberline sells any he picks through it again. The figured stuff he says he normally can get $9 for but the stuff he pulled out of probably 90 containers full in the past 10 years he says he could sell all of it for pen blanks it is so pretty at $20 per foot.

Then he says… Drew take whatever you want as long as it is just for your personal use… So… I think I will leave your trees for the other Jocks. I hope someone else takes them so they do not go to waste.

You guys have never seen such pretty wood in your lives. I will never ever tell any of you where he lives but it is close to my house. The thing is … On container is figured maple. One is rare and stunning tropical exotics and one he would not even show us… Yet… he says… See if any of you ever had a notion to become a criminal… This is more tempting than his store full of Powermatic, Jet and Delta cabnetmaking grade tools… (Interestingly enough all the containers are wirelessly on his alarm system which would call the police if the doors open without the alarm being off…) yet most have no idea of the value and no one really knows it is there.
