I was finally able to get back to this (after tearing up the entry floor, dry-walling the kitchen archway, tearing up the soon to be Nursery floor and laying new subfloor, etc…). I used a drill bit ‘guide’ from McMaster to drill 7/64” holes (thinking the bolt would be 1/4”, well they turned out the be 3/8 and I needed to get a larger drill bit for the ‘nut’ to insert into the rails from underneath (9/16”).
I got the curves on the back pieces cleaned up and am planning on cutting the spindles this week, in between installing a floor and making new stair treads…
