Well, it has been a lomg time since I posted anything on LJs, primarily because my faculty duties this semester have been keeping me busier than I would like…and that means I haven’t had any shop time since I completed my workbench. In any event, the semester had started to come to a more manageable flow, and I’m hoping to get back in the shop to start my Christmas gift building. I’ve built a fair number of boxes as gifts and I plan to build even more this year. Because I’ve almost exclusively used rabbit joints for my boxes, I want to try some new designs. I hope to get started on that soon.

In other news, my parents will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in May 2011. My sister is planning a big party for them and I want to build a nice present for them to go with this event. My wife has suggested that I build a nice mantel clock for them. I’m still in the thinking and planning stages, so I’m very open to suggestions for a 50th anniversary gift. I want to get started early so I can put a lot of time and effort into this project to make it the best project I’ve built, so to honor the amazing milestone my parents will be marking in May.

Congrats to your parents. My wife and I will be celebrating our 10th anniversary in May 2011.

50th Anniversary Traditional Gift: Gold.
50th Anniversary Contemporary/Modern Gift: Gold.
50th Anniversary Gemstone: Gold or Imperial or Golden Topaz.

Optimism and wealth are often associated with gold.

Not only is the metal gold beautiful, it is strong, and resistant to corrosion.

50th Anniversary Color: Gold.
50th Anniversary Flower: Violet

Maybe you can adorn the mantle clock with gold! I know… I’m not helping. ;-)

Here is something you may want to consider. I made a jewelry box for my wife. We recently celebrated our 3rd anniversary (both remarried) and I made it out of a piece of fir that I had picked up from my Grandparents house when we were cleaning up after they had both passed. My grandfather used this “plank” of old growth rough sawn fir to load the rototiller into the back of his El Camino. Inside the box was a tray I made out of koa that we picked up in Hawaii on our honeymoon. I have bits of wood laying around my shop from various projects…including the kidney shaped coffee table I built in high school complete with burn marks from the router table. This will become something very special someday.

The point is make the project extra special by using a piece of wood that is meaningful to them…or take an old piece of furniture and rework it into something beautiful. I still have a bit of koa left and am thinking I will make a “Bible Box” for my wife at some point. She turns 50 this year, maybe that will be the time I cut up my coffee table and highlight the top with koa….

Hope this gives you some Ideas.
