Come out of the VIRTUAL WORLD and Join Us

We have a MeetUp Group for WOODWORKERS in NE Ohio. This is a group for Ladies and Men… and for anyone interested in Woodworking.

http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/5/c/0/highres_447478816.jpeg

We have a SketchUp Class for Woodworking scheduled for this coming Saturday, March 19th 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM at the new state-of-the-art Akron-Summit County Public Library. Sketchup has been installed on all PCs… so you do not need to bring a PC or tablet (bring a USB Drive to take home some work).

Tentative and Loose Class Schedule:

2:00 PM - Intro - First… I will assess the SketchUp level of the members… and teach accordingly… and start with basics and some tricks that you will not see in tutorials. We will go over storing woodworking parts in a library so that every project doesn't need to be drawn from scratch.

2:30 PM - SketchUp for Woodworking Projects and for Woodworking Shop Design

3:00 PM - SketchUp - Sawdust Collection Enclosure for Stationary Power Tools. I'll make a YouTube video of this as I've developed a revolutionary and universal design methodology for these enclosures.

3:50 PM - Wrap-up and discussion of future YouTube-like Woodworking Shop Tours (mine and yours).

After class… those who are interested can go grab a beer. There's a variety of brew pubs downtown within walking distance.

There are only 3 spots left as on now - March 13 afternoon…!!!!

We will also be having YouTube-like Shop Tours of our members, swap meets for trading stuff that you no longer use or want to donate to beginners, and social gatherings.

We will have many more activities as the membership grows… including the following:

• Promoting the ART of WOODWORKING
• Building or Expanding or Updating a Woodworking Shop
• Designing Woodworking Projects - by yourself to share - or to get Expert Opinions from others
• Designing Low-Cost Woodworking Projects for newcomers with minimal investment in tools (so that they can con their spouses into thinking that Woodworking is an inexpensive hobby)
• Acquiring Woodworking Machines, Power Tools and Hand Tools
• Designing or Updating a Sawdust Collection System
• Pooling Resources to Buy Materials ( maybe sharing the cost of a rental truck )
• Woodworking (YouTube-like) Shop Tours, at our members Woodworking Shops (and maybe Professional Cabinet Shops to see new technology).
• Collaborating Ideas and Projects
• Hold Woodworking Training Classes where experts share expertise with beginners
• SketchUp classes for new members as the membership grows

All skills levels are welcome… from Beginners… to Home Hobbyists… to Pros who make a living from Woodworking. We started this group to meet other Woodworking enthusiasts and explore the world of Hand Made products from Wood. We will also have Social Only meetings… probably over a Micro Brew and Dinner… to discuss all things wood and sawdust… and maybe social gatherings with other local MeetUp Groups.

Come out of the Virtual World and Join Us

We have over 100 members now as we start the 3rd month of our group.

We are a MeetUp Group formed to Promote the Art of Woodworking in NE Ohio. We have experienced member and members who are just starting out in woodworking. This is a perfect blend as one of our goals is to mentor the newer members and guide them into starting a great hobby.

Other activities that we are planning are:

1) YouTube-like "Woodworking Shop Tours". We will try to make decent productions with a decent HD Video Camera and good microphones. Look some up on YouTube - they are cool to watch most of the time.

2) Projects that are specifically designed to be made with a minimal investment in tools… like a Wall Unit made with just a used Circular Saw - new blade - and panel cutting guide, a Saw Horse kit, a Miter Box and Saw, a Cordless Drill and some bits, and some Clamps and Glue… and a few other items.

3) Group buys of Hardwood directly from mills - take orders - rent a panel truck - drive a few counties away (southwest of here) and buy rough sawn or planed hardwoods (Oak, Walnut, Maple, Poplar) - deliver to members.

4) Hold SketchUp classes for Woodworking - various topics from designing a shop to building projects.

5) Swap Meets - trade tools that you no longer use for tools that you could use… and donate some tools to beginners. I can't imagine having to buy my shop now as it's a lifetime of accumulation. Getting into the art of Woodworking is not easy for beginners… so let's make it easier.

6) Attend Woodworking Trade Shows - carpool

7) social Events to "Talk Shop"

We anticipate having hundreds more members in the next few months.

Over 145 members now - come join us

Come out of the Virtual World and join us…!

We are a MeetUp Group… just getting started (Mid-February 2016)... up over 150 woodworkers so far and adding about 50 people per month… but that will pick up. We have not even started with Social Media. We will be meeting various places in NE Ohio… at members' shops… trade shows… classrooms… and social events.

We recently had our first Member Shop Tool and Technique Demo… a Hand Tool Sharpening demo that featured a Tormek, Makita and Work Sharp sharpening systems plus a Delta Conversion. These Demos will be an ongoing event in our group.

Picture frame Rectangle Font Line Wall

Table Wood Engineering Luggage and bags Desk

Gas Engineering Wood Machine Artisan

Sleeve Wood Font Hardwood Personal protective equipment

The next Member Shop MeetUp will feature Hand Plane Basics… hosted by some real pros on the subject.

Go here and check us out: http://www.meetup.com/NE-Ohio-Woodworking-Meetup/

So join us…! Everyone has something to share. We have experienced Pros and Beginners. I'm very experienced and still like to watch YouTube for anything that I am not familiar with… or to get great ideas on workshop organization.

I've scheduled a series of MeetUp Classes at the Akron-Summit County Public Library to teach a FREE class in SketchUp for Woodworkers on SATURDAY afternoons… so maybe that fits your schedule. I'll teach the basics of SketchUp, how to design Woodworking Projects, how to design Woodworking Shops… and how to design sawdust Collection Enclosures for machines… like Miter Saws.

Grop buys of tools are also a possibility.

4) Hold SketchUp classes for Woodworking - various topics from designing a shop to building projects… and always beginner classes.

Upcoming MeetUps for the NE Ohio Woodworkers

This is brief description of the Upcoming MeetUps that we have planned in the next 2 months. Please see Upcoming MeetUps for more details on each one.

Hand Plane Basics: June 11 in Lakewood - 12:00PM to 4:00 PM

This is the second of our Woodworking Demonstrations in Member Shops… and will feature two guys who are period furniture makers and also Hand Plane designers and builders. This is an essential MeetUp for anyone interested in using Hand Planes or improving their Hand Plane expertise. Hand Planes are of course a fast way of smoothing wood without the noise and mess of powered tools.

Woodworking Swap Meet - Late June or July (date to me moved)

This will be out first Swap Meet. Just bring some tools that you no longer need or duplicate tools… and swap them for something that you might need. Also… experienced members can consider giving duplicate or unused tools to our members who are new to Woodworking. We will likely have these Swap Meets quarterly or semi-annually.

Social MeetUps - Monthly - Cavaliers NBA Championship

This is our second Social MeetUp… and what better excuse to gather than celebrating Cleveland's first Pro Sports Championship since the 1950s and1960s. Keep posted for a date and time… but the idea is to be in Public Square celebrating rather then sitting on your favorite chair at home… wishing that you had gone out. This isn't last year when we were missing 3 starters… and 2 All-Stars. This is a HEALTHY CAVS team… destined for a Championship.

Project Showcase - Tentatively set for Sunday June 12th - waiting on presenters to volunteer

This is our first Project Showcase MeetUp… where some of us will either bring a project and explain how it was made (smaller portable projects)... or bring a Presentation and show slides of how it was made… or we will show a streaming video from YouTube or another site… or from your video camera or USB Drive… showing how it was made. This is a great opportunity to show new members some real-world woodworking projects… and also a great way to display the diversity of Woodworking. Please leave comments if you want to present. We will have 4-6 Presenters (20-30 minutes each) at each of these ongoing Project Showcase MeetUps.

Group Buy - Rough Sawn Hardwood from a Mill - (Moving the date to July and changing the mill - based on member feedback)

This is out first Group Buy. We will pool our resources to buy Rough Sawn Hardwood directly from a mill. When we get the date firmed… we will start to collect orders and decide who is going to the mill. Group Buys will also be an ongoing MeetUp… maybe quarterly.

Sawdust Collection Enclosure Demo - June 16 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

This will be a short and small MeetUp to demonstrate my methodology to build a Sawdust Collection Enclosure for a Miter Saw. My Methodology involves SketchUp.. and in fact… the enclosure cannot be made without SketchUp. I will also video tape the result and publish the video on YouTube. Not only is this an essential and often overlooked step in assembling a Sawdust Collection System… it's a good demonstration of how SketchUp can be used to design and build something… when you do not know ahead of time what it will look like.

Woodworking Projects for Beginners - Date, Time and Location to be determined

This is the first Woodworking Projects for Beginners MeetUp. We will gather some projects from experienced members and show how these projects can be made… step by step… with a minimal investment in tools. For example… the project can be a Wall Unit made with a used circular saw and a saw guide… rather than using a $2,000 table saw or a $600 Festool Track Saw. The idea is to get new Woodworkers started on making projects… without having to accumulate thousands of dollars in tools first. We can also Mentor anyone who wants to start a project that we present.

SketchUp for Woodworking - June 25 - 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

We've held a number of SketchUp classes so far… offering Beginner SketchUp classes and mixing in some more advanced topics for experienced SketchUp users. This class will cover the basics as the SketchUp tools apply to Woodworking… and we will also design the project of your choice in class.

Woodworking Shop Tour - Date, Time and Location to be determined.

We will have small monthly or quarterly or on-demand gatherings of people who want to see live, YouTube-like Woodworking Shop Tours. We may also create videos in these shop tours… where the host can use the video for insurance purposes… or just have a Shop Tour to post on YouTube. Please advise if you want to host a Shop Tour… and we will gather some people to help you record the tour.

We did the Design Session a couple of weeks ago ad the Build and Test is coming up. The Prototype was completed last year… and my second model is finished and tested great. This is a revolutionary design.

Projects for Beginners
We need to get some beginner projects underway… cool projects that can be made with a minimal investment in tools. Join us if you have any projects that were made with simple tools. I am looking for a beginner who wants to make a Wall Unit… using a circular saw and guide, a miter saw, and a biscuit joiner or compressor and brad nailer.
