I’ve got an old Stanley #55 I’m working on. I’ve sharpened all the moulding knives, got the manual, still looking for a couple missing parts, etc. The plane body, originally nickel plated has some rust and some of the nickel pl...

51 yr old and recently retired from my first career, and about to enter a 2nd career to pay for hobbies, vacations, etc.
I consider myself an intermediate level woodworker. My interest was captured in high school and after graduation but I didn't have the means, space or equipment to pursue it. Then came Norm Abram and my interest was re-kindled. I began to acquire tools and eventually built a stand alone workshop in my backyard. Soon my need for furniture was being met by my creations.
Woodworking then was put on the back burner when an addition to my home became necassary to accomdate a growning family. Once the kdis reached high school and college I found more time to pursue my hobby.
I'm intersted in cabinet construction, furniture, home remodeling, creative wood projects, and improving my skills all around. While I re-started my woodworking venture I was mostly interested in power tools, fixed machinery, etc. The more I ventured and the more I learned the more I became interested in hand tools. Now I'm looking to fine tune my skills and maybe one day making my work pay for itself as I pursue custom cabinetry for clients.

This will be my first go at restoring a wooden bodied hand plane. In the pics you’ll see it’s an older Stanley wooden bodied plane that is rusted up pretty bad. I can handle the rust issue with electrolysis like I’ve done m...
So I got to work on some of the #4s from my treasure box. Below is a Dunlap #4. Not a particularly nice plane and it didn’t have a “major rust” problem. But there was some rust and plenty of grime. The iron looked like it had...
So I found a C/L post or the sale of 7 hand planes. The only one I was interested in was a Stanley #7, so I inquired. The seller said he wanted $110 for all of them. Hmmmmm, I thought. If I could get him down some more that’d mean I’...
Why don’t the high end brass hinges for boxes, small cabinets, etc. come with screws? The hinges are great but this makes you go out and find the correct sized brass screw. And the screws are too damn soft and break off. I’m not t...
