An introduction

I came upon this site quite by accident, doing research for an upcoming wood project. I had decided, on a lark, that I would a new dining room table for our new house. (Posting to come on that.) It came out well enough—to my own surprise—that I decided to tackle a few other projects. I’m nearly done with a recycling cabinet, I made a screen door, and one of those big stand-up mirrors. Next up is a drafting desk for my wife. This site seemed an interesting way to steal (borrow?) good ideas, get support, and see the (amazing!) work others have done.

So my background… I am not a carpenter or anything close to it. I’m work in political communications, specifically on national security issues, here in Washington, DC. Previously I was a speechwriter. In my spare time, I’m a graphic designer and photographer. All creative things, surely, but not exactly physical. So my wife was pleasantly surprised to see that I was pretty handy when we bought our first house about 6 months ago. (I always knew, she was skeptical.) Having entirely renovated our kitchen ourselves, I’m tackling the smaller things, and now furniture needs, apparently.

Looking forward to learning more—

-D

Welcome to the site and let the learning begin….it flows both ways by the way. With a graphic design background I am sure you bring a lot of artistic ability to the workshop. You will get hooked into marquetry and inlay before you know it and make simple things ornate. It is kind of like an addiction, but in a good way :)

Hi Dave.

Welcome aboard from one of the Canadian contingent here. This place is like life; the more you put in, the more you’ll get back.

Enjoy!
