My dad called it a Bow Line! (Not a boline, that is a knot)) I use it to fair a curve. Here is his design (and mine) simple and sweet, one piece of wood, four holes, one string!
Speak up, improvements? Caveats?

Codie's Gecko cage

My Granddaughter came to me the other day needing to build a cage for her new gecko!

She brought some “found” plexiglass and a bunch of ideas, hoping I had enough wood and hardware.

After reviewing her ideas and available materials this is what we came up with.

The base is 3/4” AC ply with a shellac finish and the top is made from cedar with 1/2” ply blocks to reinforce

the corners and 1/4” hardware cloth. The sides are 1/8” plexiglass and are screwed to 1” corner blocks and to

a rabbit in the base.

I think that it is appropriate and important that she receives credit for the design and use of materials.

I did help her with a bit of engineering and I made the dangerous (for her) cuts and helped a little with

assembly.

The gecko is very happy with it’s new home! The only thing left is a good lamp to keep him warm…..........

I think she has her eye on my articulated arm bench lamp!

NOT a jewelry box!

Instead a box for the person that has a lot of expensive jewelry! LOL!

“Seedling” Cherry I cut down from a friends back yard in Tacoma, WA, Spalted Alder – again from a friends place, Bloodwood – purchased from Sumner Woodworkers store in Sumner, WA and EVA foam (also known as instrument foam) – purchased from Friendly Foam here in WA. (the only company out of three to return an email!)

(I include links to the companies I dealt with because I was very happy with the customer service and product!)

Made for my Mother-in-Law as a Christmas present because she is the best MIL ever!
The most difficult project I have done to date Because I don’t really have a dedicated space for woodworking anymore or access to my “good” equipment that is in storage!

I will post a few pictures here and the rest (in no real order) is on Photobucket!
I hope you enjoy and all comments and questions are welcome!

P.S.
A review of the Trend Router and another tool or two to come soon!

Carved and Painted Joint project

I got the idea for this when a customer asked a friend to build an outdoor/rooftop sign for a tavern. They supplied the sketch for the sign and I thought it looked a little crude, figured I could do better. I think I did but it isn’t fair because I have no pictures of the sign itself.

The base is built up MDF, carved with various tools. the trees are carved Yellow Pine, painted and applied separately. I did the carving and sent to my sister to be painted. Paint was acrylic with a clear lacquer topcoat. I still need to finish the frame and protective lexan (curved).

I think I will try a few more pieces of this type of artwork, it was a little messy with the MDF dust but was very satisfying and now I have a good sample of my sisters talent as well.

The wood ( stored in a lumber rack) went through a flood. A month or two later there was a flurry of wings and what I had left was beautiful if somewhat dusty stuff.
Joints are mortise and loose tenon. If I ever get my Portfolio CD back I will post a few more projects.

Birch frame and birch ply with a torsion box base with drawers for all of the needed supplies. The carving is the Midwives Association of Washington State. Now that she has changed to a regular nursing career I will sell it to one of the association members more than likely.
