Well it took me a while to get the gunk off. I have cleaned several planes and I have never seen any thing at difficult to remove as that stuff. It was almost like wall paper paste mixed with sawdust and grease. Alas, there was not much of the japanning left after removing the gunk. I would say there is only about 50% left. Should I just restore or still just do enough to make it usable?

Make is usable, then in a month or two ask yourself the same question.
