Stylish Box # 2, "Cameo" Some Marquetry Steps

Blog entry by Dennis Zongker posted 91 days ago 571 reads 4 times favorited 28 comments Add to Favorites Watch

It’s been four months since I’ve been able to do any woodworking, Since my back problems and back surgery. And finally I’m back to what I love most in life, “making things out of wood.”

Here are a few pictures of some of the marquetry that is going to be on my next box. This style of marquetry is one that I have developed over the years. It is similar to the “Andre-Charles Boulle” style. Their are 10 steps to this style which are very simple. In these pictures I’m only showing 3 steps.

It’s nice to be back into the woodworking family of Lumberjocks. I’ve really missed being a part of everything. Thanks for looking.

Sorry to hear about your injury.I went through something very similar years ago.It has a way of effecting everything we do,but we learn to appreciate life a little more.
I am happy to hear that you are back in the shop, that always speeds recovery.

The cameo blog is very nice, the pictures and text are clear and orderly. The inlay is outstanding! You have a steady hand and infinite patience.I salute you.
Very nice work Dennis,I look forward to seeing more.

Dennis I’ve got to ask you what was asked of me when I broke my back…....How long you had a weak back? and you say, Oh about a week back! No it isn’t funny. I’ve been there and still am. They can’t operate on mine unless they put cushions in between my crushed discs. Then I’d have to wear a spinal stimulater that’s supposed to trick your brain into not thinking you’re not feeling pain. My own Dr advised me against it claiming it only helped about 30-40% of patients. So I’m stuck with the pain and the pills. I’m glad to see you back and I hope to God you don’t have to endure that horrible dibilatating pain that takes so much of our lives away. We all have missed your beautiful art.

Welcome back dennis. I saa that you also prepare lunch while you work on your veneer. Thats a great idea when you can’t move about much.

Glad that everything is working out.

Dennis, last year I broke my back they put in two 12” rods and 24 screws and 5 weeks later I had to have it done all over again because all the screws were falling out. But the good news is Iam better then ever and I hope that this is going to be the case for you. I look forward to seeing more of your master pieces. Welcome back. billp

Hi Biilp,

Wow, that’s sounds scary having rods in your back. I’m glad it’s going good for you now. How did you brake your back?

When they operated on me they cut out the herniated part of the disk that was pressing up to my nerves. So for everything is ok. I’m back to working 12 hour days again. I only work that many hours a day because during the day I engineer furniture, den’s, kitchens, and manage my company. Then after work I get to play with my woodworking.

I was at Hearnes Hardwoods in PA. and step backwards off a platform and boom. Nine years earlier I had a spinal cord desease called opll. My spinal cord was being crushed, they took off the top of my spine and hinged it,the called it a Double Door Lamioplasty, only one doctor in Cleveland could do the operation because it was close to the brain stem and ran down to C7 it took 12 hours for that operation. Its amazing how we can bounce back. It makes you appreciate every day. I really look forward to seeing more of your master pieces.
