Hey folks. Its my birthday in 3 days, and for it my “biological dad” sent me this slab of wood and a giftcard for rockler in the mail. Now the giftcard I love, because I shouldnt have a problem finding something I want that I can use with it, but the slabs another matter. Its about 6 inches deep, 8 across and 20 long, with spines on the bottom of it. Im going to be working with all handtools this summer, and if I could make this into lumber i’d be alot happier, anyone got any suggestions? Also, i have no idea on the woodtype, but its very dense

Your tagline says “may you live in interesting times”. I like that and think “may you come across interesting wood” to work with. As Autumn says, I might just sit it on a shelf and look at it a while. Some of my favorite pieces have come from a chuck of wood that I had no idea where to start…eventually, you pick it up one day and have a mission.

That said, my first inclination would be to make a nice bowl on a lathe out of the larger half, maybe a small bandsaw box out of the remaining chunk and maybe even set aside a pen blank or two.

Best of luck with it!

Lovely piece of wood. Most probably a burl of some sort. But what to do with it? Simple. Put it on the shelf and wait for it to ‘Talk to You’. It will. Just trust it.

Only then will you know.

Nice chunk of wood. Would have been a nice turned tray. Oh well it’ll still make some nice small boxes eh? Have fun with it.
