So I came up with this rack. I didn’t glue it, I just screwed it all to gether. I did leave the spacers loose so I could pull them out and not use them if I don’t want too. Made from all kinds of plywood. No finish or sanding. Very slow putting it together do to all the cuts. Anyway maybe it will give some ideas to others. Thanks for looking and leaving comments.

This is what I came up with for the contest. Its just what every good craftsman should have. A tool chest! I wanted something that would be A eye popper and something with some knots. After milling up a lot of Walnut I came up with the knots in the front. I was really hoping to win the contest with this one. But then I saw all the other great looking projects. But we will see how I do. The whole tool chest is made of Walnut. The front of the drawers are inlayed with White Oak and the bottoms of the drawers are also Oak also the backs are also out of Oak. I dove tailed all of the drawer fronts and backs. I finished up with 3 coats of hand rubbed poly and finish with a good coat of wax.
Any way here are a few more pictures as I was building it. I hope every one injoys them.

Porch swinging bench / Challenge06

Well I wanted something for the Gorilla glue contest. I just didn’t know what to make. This morning I came up with a swinging bench for my front porch. My wife has always wanted one. So I went to the lumber yard and got some 2X4s and some ceder. It took me all day to cut and glue (I had no idea how fun Gorilla glue is. It foams every place you don’t want it to.) I used screws as well. I also used chain to hang it from. So lets take a look at how I did it.

Hope Chest

Well I needed a project for the last week. So here is what I came up with. It goes with the tea table. Its a hope chest for my daughter. I am adding alot of pictures so you can see how I did it. Have fun. Thanks for leaving feed back.
This is after I hand cut all the dove tails and put the box together.

Here I have made some Queen Ann legs but made them on a small scale.

After getting the legs done, I needed to make a top So I thought about a flat top but wanted something curved. This was don in a few steps as I made the frame first.

Then I used some 1/4 inch plywood and bent it over the frame.

After that I had some Walnut burl veneer left over from the tea table so I used it for the top. I veneered it to the top of the ply wood. I used my veneer press on it.

After I had that done I glue up and veneered a nother piece of plywood for the inside lid.

I used some Walnut and made my own veneer. After that I glued it to the bottom of the lid.

After I was done with that I added a sides all the way around the lid.
Then with lots of sanding, I was ready for the finish. So here it is all finished up.

Then I put 5 coats of poly hand rub on it.

So there it is I had alot of fun making this. I really learned a lot on this one.

Serve it up with class

Thit is a very old style Serving Tea Table used in the 1700s. They where built in alot of styles. If you owned one like this one, you had alot of money and were very well off.

I started the legs about a month or so ago for this table. All the Walnut came from old gun stock blanks that the woman was using for fire wood. I worked out a trade of one load of pine firewood for a load of Walnut. I put a blog on a few months ago about them.
So this whole project is done using the gun stock blanks. The top is made out of some Walnut burl veneer I have had for some time now. All of the wood I used on this table was going to the fire.
I started off with the legs because I have never done any like these before. I wasnt sure that they would turn out. They are all shaped by hand and they where fun to make, but hard.
I had never done veneer before so I made a vacuum press. I ordered all the stuff I needed to make the bag. Glued it up and started the vacuum. Wow no leaks and it worked great. (A whole new area in woodworking for me). I had alot of fun making this Serving tea table.

They have been a bit harder then I thought they would be. Most of the work has been done by hand with a rasp. As I go along I will post more pictures. All the wood is Walnut. It is all the gun stock blanks that I was given. All of them need to be milled and cut. I am making the legs for a small tea table. As I go along I will post it. Thanks for looking. Dave

Baby Cradle for new nephew

I would like to start off by saying thank you very much to Dewayne. He sent me the planes for the cradle after seeing his. So a great big thank you!!!!
This cradle took some 300 hours and about 5 months of working when I could on it. Its all made out of Oak and Purple Heart. I did change a few things on it to make it my own so I didnt copy Dewaynes the whole way. I made this for a gift for my Brother and Sister in-law. I hope it will last a long time and many babies to come okay maybe one more.

Here is the wood I used on the cradle.

(2004) He likes all the above. I wanted to put all of them together so I came up with this display box. I just now found my pictures of it, so I thought I would post it. Made out of Oak and the corners are walnut veneer that I made. I had the glass so I cut it to fit. I made a frame and then nailed and glued it to the box. And yes all the football cards are autographed by the players. Thanks for looking

I didnt like the feed table as it would mess up and scratch the wood. So I made a table to fit on my table saw. Not a new idea. Lots of them out there. But I dont like spending money on tools I already have. I think it works very well.

I made it out of 3/4 MDF. It is something all shops should have. I wanted it to be the same hieght as my table saw so I could put it as my out feed table also a glue up table. On the bottom I made it so I could store all my hand tools.

Well I had to come up with space in my shop for my wood. I have alot of tools and not much wall space. So one day me and my son set out to make a wood rack. After a few hours of drawing, moving tools, Nothing worked for my wood shop. I was joking around with him and said, wouldnt it be cool if we could hang it and have it lower down to me? Then I could have it go back up. Well after a lot of planing and going over How much my roof could hold and wait size I wanted it to be, We went to work. It is 6 feet by 7 feet. It goes up and down with pulleys and a winch.

Iam sorry to all who have been waiting. The last few months have been crazy. Any way after glueing the handle and the knob to the plane its time to finish sanding down to 200 grit. Then I put about 3 coats of tung oil on the sides and top. To get the bottom flat I use some sand paper on top my table saw. This will get a nice flat bottom. Nothing on the bottom but a little wax. I hope this project has been as much fun for you as it was for me. I will do more like this if you all want me to.

Lets make a hand plane Part 2

Well are you ready for more. Lets get going. Now that your handle is in place its starting to look like a plane.
Step 5. Now we need to make a front handle. I had to glue up some small blocks of Jatoba. I then used my lathe and turned the handle out. (Again you can make yours look any way you want). Then I drilled out a hole in the planes front. I put it right in the middle of the plane. You can see my marks.
Step 6. We need some way to hold the blade in. You can use a dowel made from wood or brass. I like the look of brass, thats what I used. Drill out the holes for the brass rod to go in. Then glue it in. Next we need a wedge. I used Jatoba on this as well. Make it any shape you like. But make sure it is dead flat on the bottom so it holds the blade in place. You will need to take your time on this so the blade and wedge fit tight.
Step 7. Sand the whole plane down to 220 grit.
Well thats it for now the next project post will be on finishing the plane and getting the bottom of the plane flat. But check out your nice new tool and the greatest thing is you did it. The next post will be in a few days.

Lets make a hand plane Part 1

First off let me say that this plane is hand crafted by me. However the look is from Thos.Angle. I really liked the way his plane looked so I headed to the (thats right) the shop. I wanted to make it a project for us beginners. So I hope that Thos. Angle is not upset. So for any one that would like a plane lets get started.
First lets get some wood. I used Oak and Jatoba. Then we cut it to size (I over size on the first cut) but finished is as follows:
Oak 2 1/8 in. wide by 17 in. long the jatoba is 1/4 in. wide x 17 in. long. The handle is from a peace that is 3/4 in. X 5 in. x 6 in. or so. The blade and chip break is from an old stanley 14 in plane I had. Its 2 in. wide.
Step 1. We cut the long peace of oak at 45 and the shaving side at 60. Next take the 45* bed and use a 1/2 straight bit in the router this will be for the chip breaks bolt. Then we take all the peaces and glue them up. Make sure the mouth is about 1/8 open when glued up.
Step 2. Make the handle. I copied a stanley. (You can make one that you like.) I used my band saw to cut it out then I used a round over bit in the router to shape it up. A little work with a file and sand it up..
Step 3. After the glue has dried up I cut the planes front and back to Finish size. Then cut the back of the plane I like the 1/4 rounded look. Again here you can make it any way you like.
Step 4. I wanted to try my new chisels out so I cut a mortis out in the back of the plane for the handle. After this is done and you have a nice tight fit glue it up.
More to come on the next projects page. But for now that will get you on the way.
