well done… I have downloaded sketchup but haven’t even figured out how to draw a box with dimension lines, yet!

I just went through the 9 sessions you have up… exceptionally well done!
I need to practice with it and get use to the icons. Like, learn to ask the right questions. I think it is so simple that I am making it more difficult than it is. It is nice to know there is a place to get help as that is what it will come down to. I’ve only tried it out for about 15 minutes…
I also remember that I said that when I retired, I wouldn’t touch another computer… and I wonder where my time goes.

Dave,

I was thinking a component for a pockethole for the screws that also bear that name might be neat.
And I’ll bet my next paycheck you know how I did it.
Here’s a photo of a bit of .75” material bored for a pocketscrew!

Don, yes, you could do that with a component and keep the component for future use if you wanted that sort of detail. If I were saving a component of that sort for that use I would align the axes to make it easy to place the component and I might even establish a gluing plane so the component would drop right into place on the surface. I’d also reverse the faces on the component so that after completing the hole, the exposed faces are correct side out. If it was also setup to cut the opening, it wouldn’t tend to load up the model as real holes would. Of course a component can only cut an opening in a single face.
Good work.
As I wrote in the opening blog post, this sort of detail isn’t all that useful when looking at an overall model. I suppose you might use it to detect situations where using that type of fastening would cause problems.

Dave said:
”FWIW, my opinion is that in most cases, countersinking holes in SketchUp models is overkill. Even though it can be done quickly, it creates additional faces that usually don’t add a lot to the model. If youneed to show them for some reason, go ahead but if they won’t show anyway, why bother?”
To which I reply:
A touch of OCD perhaps? Don’t ask me how I come up with this reason… :o)

dont forget to add that spinal tap in there too while you’re at it ;o)
unless this is a presentational piece where the countersink hole is visible and is a feature of that piece (jig/etc) this is def. an overkill. even OCD would be hard to justify this…lol
But a good technique to add to your virtual toolbox nonetheless – thanks for the post!

I like to do exploded drawings of my models so I tend to show all the joinery and the countersinks/counterbores..and I am OCD!

Your posts are always informative, now could you please tell me how I can get myself to stop trying to pan everything I see on my computer screen to get a better look at it:-) . It takes me a day or two to stop after a long Sketup session.
