Just to stretch your mind a bit. Draw something like this.

I was looking at some of your sketching man you are good.
Do you have a site where I can see some of your work?
By the way nobody was home at my daughter last night to help me measure, but I am going tonight.

Thanks

Hi GMman. Thank you.

No worries on getting to your daughter’s. Unfortunately I expect I’ll be tied up tonight with a couple of other projects.

As to seeing my stuff, I’ve got a bunch of SketchUp images here and some additional ones here. You’ll have to wade through the junk and non-SketchUp pictures at the second link.

Are we limited to basic Sketchup or are 3rd party plugins allowed?

You can use plugins written for SketchUp if you want.

By the way, notice how many high points there are on mine. Make the the same number.

kinda crappy, but this is what I’ve got with basic sketchup tools (circle, line, square, offset):

probably the original path wasn’t completely tangent at the connection points so that didn’t help, and the offset kinda broke the path to ‘steps’. don’t really use those too often, but I suppose I could clean it up somehow.

It’s a start, anyway.

Mine was a first stab at something like the base of this table.

I didn’t have access to the image when I was drawing so I was working from memory. Poor memory, I guess.

ok, I couldn’t resist, and had to make-it-betta:

still def. different than the original-original table, which twist both ways (axis)

I only hope one day to be able to use SketUp like this. I am still trying to get an otagon to turn out so I can plan my next knot.

Got to keep playing and reading.

So, tell me. How did you approach drawing the sine wave around the curve?

started with a rectangle to help me keep align to green/red axis. drew a circle of same size, and marked my 72 degrees angle (to make 5 high spots 360/5=72) and pushed the pie up – this will be my base for the sine, and the center of rotation. made that pie into a component:

then I draw a rectangle from the edges of the pie, and pushed that into a box. divided it with lines into halves, and draw 2 arcs that meet in the middle:

deleted straight guide lines, and pushed half of the box clear, made remaining profile a component, and intersected it with the pie component to get the circular sine profile :

rotated a copy of that profile around center of rotation (center of pie) and flipped it horizontally (scale -1) to create a full sine profile, drew a rectangle at edge of profile to be followed along:

made followed-me result into component, and rotated 144 degrees around center of rotation, duplicated 4 times , and this is what I get:

Generally speaking – I’m all for plugins when they can help me speed up some processes, but I always want to be able to understand what’s behind them and do things manually with basic tools. this one was done with the most basic tools of Sketchup.

Very interesting method. I agree with you about understanding how to do things manually before using plugins. I thought about doing it the way you showed with the curve drawn on the flat and then extruded through t but didn’t like the shape of the resulting curve.

That’s was a tough one.

PurpLev – thanks for the step by step directions. That help me out a lot.

DaveR – I would love to see how you did it.

I gave-up. Judging by the smoothness of the model there is probably a fairly simple way of constructing it. If I could program, I’d have Sketchup allow you to ‘freeze’ points on a model and push/pull the model between those points.

jimp – you’re welcome, I too would like to see how Dave took upon this one. the more ways, the better.

in RE Greg’s idea, I think this is where Sketchup can be seen as a “sketching” app compared to a full modeling environment like Maya for example where you can do anything your can think of, and quite easily (once you get to know how to use it – but I guess thats a valid approach to any app). for example – in Maya , if you create a Curve, and use a Follow me tool to create an object – that object is still tied to the original curve. if you modify the original curve- the “followed me” shape will update as well, so you can create a rough shape, and then finesse it by modifying it’s “base” curve. now THIS is something I would LOVE to see coming up in sketchup in future releases.

Sorry for the delay in showing my method for this. I’ve got two drawing projects for a client that have short deadlines so I’ve been working on them at home. Here at work we’re getting ready for new gas machines and I’ve been drawing the custom brackets we need to have built for them plus I’ve got equipment to repair. Maybe over the weekend I’ll manage it.
