Tweaks #1

There seemed to be some interest in my post yesterday on design so I thought I would follow up with this …..

I never can seem to leave a design alone and call it good enough.

I have a commission on the books for a Fremont Bed. I was not satisfied with how I dealt with the overhang of the top cap - it was OK, but didn't seem to jive with the rest of the design. I just drew this up a few minutes ago and will propose the change to my client.

The original is on the right - the revision on the left.

Every now and then - if I have the time - I will do a quick post on some of these tweaks - if there is interest.

The bed is just part way finished - I had to put it aside to work on other things. As soon as it is done I will be posting photos.

Tweaks to my Fremont Bed Done

Several months ago I posted a proposed design change to the cap rail on my Fremont Bed. At the time, there was a mixed reaction to this. The bed has finally made it to the current spot on my schedule and is now ready to go the finisher. Seeing the bed in "real life" makes it easier to visualize the results. For an easy comparison lets start here with three images from my original post.

While the original design worked - the abrupt ending of the cap did not set right with me - it fell flat. A major theme of the design is an outward and upward movement - this permeates all the elements of the piece. The cap had outward movement, but the slight angle on the end did was not sufficient upturn for me. It needed an upward "bump". The "curl back" provided the bump as well as enhancing the overall Asian feel of the piece.
The original design was a queen size bed in African Mahogany - this one is king size and cherry.

As always top notch work and designing.

Before & After Beauty shots

With the bed set up in short rails I think its easier to see the effect of the upturned top cap

I will post both the original mahogany bed without the upturn and the revised bed with the upturn (in cherry)
