I'm a retired autoworker, retiring from GM with 33.4 years in 2006 when they closed the OKC assembly plant. I picked up the woodworking bug as a child from my dad. I took a drafting class and beginning woodworking in high school, that being my only training. Everything else I've picked up on my own, from dad, magazines, books, etc! I've been gradually adding, subtracting and upgrading my tools for the past 30 years or so, finally building a 16' x 20' shop in the back yard after I retired and then adding even more tools with the added space and time to use them. It was a must to get everything out of the garage so I could spend more time woodworking. The BOSS has to park in the garage every night so I always had to put everything away and clean up at night. Practicing my hobby has been sporadic over the years with periods of being busy and periods where I didn't do anything for several months or longer. The new shop and retirement have revitalized my interest in staying busy. I've got a long list of things I want to do and, of course, now that I'm at it the BOSS has come up with a few things too. I consider my skills to be average or intermediate especially compared to projects I've seen on this website. Those projects give me something to shoot for. Hopefully, I have many years left to accomplish better things in my woodworking.

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.
God Bless

Thanks for the welcome. And, you’re right, it is addictive. Spent more time on here this week than my motorsports websites. That, believe me, takes some doing.

Darell,

Genuine congrats on the anniversary!

Your story is very close to mine—although I don’t have anywhere near the gear and space you have. (We plan on selling the house so everything’s kind of on hold).

I just took a look at your shop…Man! It’s handsome, well-thought out and equipped with choice tools that any knowledgeable woodworker can envy and choose for their own. It appears you’ve done good research and planned well.

My next shop will—must!—have air conditioning. I’ve talked to enough shopowners to make AC among the top priorities in the shop.

And I love your good-lookin’ lil’ buddy right by your side there.

Best,
Peter

Thanks Peter. Yeah, I’m pretty proud of my shop. I wish I did better work in it. It’s got a/c but I hate to run it due to the cost. I usually make do with a fan. Glad you like my little buddy. He’s a lovable little cuss for sure.
