Great for uneven floors

Great for uneven floors

25 days ago by DannyBoy | 6 comments »

From the start, I needed to make sure that my saw would be movable. With a small shop, floor space is at a premium and it only makes things difficult to admit that my floor is not at all level and even. This system took care of both of those needs. The casters are well built and work well on the uneven floor. Plus, once you are done moving the unit, you flip it down onto it’s own feet right into your floors sweet-spot. Two bits of advice: First, you probably won’t matc...

Good and fast

Good and fast

33 days ago by DannyBoy | 4 comments »

I picked up the 5-piece set of these from Lowes yesterday to drill holes to run wires through floor joists. I’ll be comparing these to the last ones I had which came in a catch-all bit kit I got for Christmas years ago (they sucked). The bits bored fast. I mean really fast. I’m not sure what difference in the design that makes them bore so quickly, but it definitely made the difference. I used the 5/8” to bore through the joists at a slight angle (since I didn’t...

An Old Master

An Old Master

304 days ago by DannyBoy | 3 comments »

I happened across a suggestion for this jig in a modern day Arts and Crafts furniture book. I was surprised that I found an old tool like this suggested there since usually books like that are full of merchandise someone paid to have put in there. Anyway, I found one on Ebay and paid about $32 with shipping to have it in my hands. Then, I stuck it in a drawer. And it got covered in dust. Then it was shoved to the back of the drawer to make room for some inferior Craftsman screw drivers...

Check out from the Library...

Check out from the Library...

327 days ago by DannyBoy | 5 comments »

I was astonished to actually find something at the local library that I found at the B&B earlier this year! I actually found a lot of new books in the section where I had combed over many times before. When I saw this particular one, I checked it out because I saw a sideboard that would fit some storage in our house perfectly. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until I got home that I realized there isn’t as much plan in this book as a parts list and some finished product. This seem...

Great saw for a big box store

Great saw for a big box store

331 days ago by DannyBoy | 9 comments »

I know, we all give the big box stores crap for having shoddy this, that, and the other. But let’s face it, we nearly all shop there. Lowes has always been a good place and I continue to love buying from there. I was lucky enough to get offered a bit of a shopping spree from my father for my birthday (a bit belated) and Lowes was just down the street. For the past 6 months I had been cursing myself for spending $30 on a crappy Black your Decker saw that was mostly plastic. I boug...

Great Deal

Great Deal

After being overly frustrated with the Craftsman router that I started out with (which still makes a good router for my router table), I finally broke down and bought this one this last weekend. I intended on picking up the Bosch combo at Lowes, but this one was on sale and I’m price minded to a fault. However, I can’t see how I could have made a better decision. The router is solid. 100%. I’ve not had the luxury of working with a mid-grade router like this before, bu...

Enlightening

Enlightening

I just got this book in the mail yesterday after I had found it on amazon while looking for another book. I was able to read the introduction before I ordered and I was already impressed. Sam Sherrill takes an ecological, economic, and just common sense approach to addressing the waste that our society generates by not treating felled trees of our urban forests as assets or inventory but as waste to be thrown away. I haven’t completed reading the book cover to cover yet, (I’m...

Pleasantly Surprised -or- The Abuse is Over

Pleasantly Surprised -or- The Abuse is Over

599 days ago by DannyBoy | 15 comments »

For years I suffered under the oppression of a hard backed miter box saw. I hated the fact that one cut took what seemed like hours and usually resulted in my arm feeling like a loose rubber band. The years that I had spent with my hard backed saw abusing me had caused me to grow so fond of it. It only hurt me because it loved me. So, when I saw this saw (love that line) at my local Sears I was all flushed and almost ashamed to consider taking into the sanctity of my hard back saw and I...
