One of those projects that gets started, forgotten and then rediscovered a few years later. Most of the work on the carving was done with a Dremel tool. Found the carving in a box in the garage and used the last of my molding rubber to make a mold of it. Tile is made from hydrostone and painted, dyed and glazed.

Original carving(not shown)” is Asian mahogany. Hard, dense crisp wood.Dark red.

I made a rubber concrete mold from it and this is the sixth tile from that mold. ...

Iron oxide finish is made from products available from Sculpt Nouveau.

http://www.sculptnouveau.com/

The frame is made from a chunk of stripe grained sapele mahogany. A little more dense and heavier then Honduran, but a delight to work with. Machines and finishes easily.

Finish is my traditional dark oak dye stain, MinWax jazz’d up mahogany oil stain and Seedlac shellac.
...
still needs a good coat of wax,...this will do it for today >grin<

Martin Luther King Memphis Black Cherry , Mallet

Made this cherry leather faced mallet for the Gorilla Glue contest
..
Made from a cherry short with a long story and a 1/8 thick leather off cut. Filled with a few old lead fishing sinkers to add balance and some snap in the tap. Its diminutive size and soft faces are designed for light adjustments.
...
the wood story
..
About 15 years ago we lived in Bartlett, Tennessee which is a suburb of Memphis. In the Sunday paper we noticed a classified ad for cherry and walnut lumber @ a dollar a board foot. Never missing a wood bargain, we called, got directions and drove into southern Memphis to take a look at it. Seller met us at an old shed across the street from an old church. Shed was stuffed with rough-cut boards of cherry and walnut. Dusty, and undisturbed for many years it really looked like a mess. Not to go home empty handed my son and I dug through the pile of lumber, finding the best of the bunch. We came up with pretty big pile, about 140 bft.
When the seller was helping us load the wood into the pickup he told us about the wood. The trees came from across the street … and once were on the grounds of the Baptist Church. He said he was the minister of the church and the trees were blown down many years earlier by a tornado. When we were about done loading he told us the trees were special, .... special because Martin Luther King had once visited the church and prayed while under the trees. Story stuck to the wood and has followed it everywhere since. I made many items from that lumber, a shaker clock, a chair, dresser, boxes and cutting boards for the save the Lumberjocks children event.
..

White slip clay, very delicate in green state.
I bought a gallon from a shop that was quitting business.

This is was a fun pair of frames. Helped clean of my short pile and I entertained my self in the process.

Tiles were inspired by nail hole woodcuts by by Birger Sandzen. A very cool artist.

Thanks in advance for looking at my work.
