I’ve got one or two. They are great.

I have thought about collecting those. They seem like a good resource. Some of the designs seem timeless, but at the same time a lot of the designs seem really dated.

Looks like I might be missing something. I don’t have any.

The books I like are not woodworking books, but art books. By far the best is

http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Ornament-Franz-Sales-Meyer/dp/0486203026

It has something for everyone, including furniture. 548 pages for about $12. You cant beat it.

Another real nice one:

http://www.amazon.com/Medieval-Ornament-Illustrations-Pictorial-Archive/dp/0486285782

I get a lot of inspiration from these two books.

You prompted me to dig mine out & see what I need; numbers four, five and eight would be glady received! <g>

I just bought #4 and #8 from abebooks. They’re a series that can be re-visited again and again. Thanks for the nudge Dan.

I have #s 5,6 and 7 and have finally found a place where I can get #s 1 and 2 but haven’t found #s 3 or 4. The one’s I have are great to look at for inspiration.

My#8 arrived today and I have to say, that for me, it’s great disappointment. The format is very different from the first seven, and if I understood the introduction correctly, was originally published as a magazine “Fine Woodworking Furniture: 102 Contemporary Designs”.

So, it contains only 102 designs, and they’re all furniture, including 48 pages of tables, 36 of seating. Issue #2 contained something like 1000 examples! In #8, there are none of the wonderfully wacky sculptures, turnings, boxes and musical instruments that made the previous issues so fascinating. Oh, I’ve just seen two boxes. Some of the double page spreads contain only one picture with maybe 100 words and half a page of blank paper. Yes, there’s more text attached to each of the projects, but overall, it’s a very ‘thin’ book compared the old ‘uns. I think.

I agree Stewart.
My thoughts the book was more about employing staff writers then woodworking items. Yes a disappointment … someone should fire whom ever was in-charge of making the book.

Woodworking is a visual hobby not a subject to read about in books.

Wow! I was just thinking about those a few days ago! I had the first three prior to moving to Sweden, but had to let them go because of the cost of moving so much became a bit too spendy!

Though I haven’t really been doing the wood stuff much, I’ve always enjoyed the look and feel (and sometimes smell) of fine crafted wood projects. These books, along with frequent forays to the ‘Real Mother Goose’ shops in Portland, OR, where many NW woodworkers showcased their work as well, always stimulated me to ‘make’ things.

Now that I’m getting back in the sawdust, I think I’m going to have to repurchase these as well as adding a few more. Thanks for the memory boost Dan.
