WHICH ONE IS THE BEST

Blog entry by DAN posted 402 days ago 494 reads 0 times favorited 26 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Hey Lumberjocks

I ran a test run of tiles. All finished the same way with the exception of background color.
All are fired stoneware clay handpressed into a plaster mold made from one of my wood carvings.

10 backgrounds with a wash of bronze finish … see my 100 pounds of clay blog to see the brand.

These are unique in that the bronze finish is patinated using “liver of sulphur” to a dark brown.. Topcoat is a matt laqcuer to lock in the patina.

My question is which are the most appealing to the eye. I plan on selling them framed.

Give me a vote of for the top of the heap … top 3 or 4 or whatever and and one for the least appealing or need more work etc. Note there is a variation in the relief carving in the tiles. I’ve been carving the mold a little, adding a little new detail etc. Mold is getting worn having pressed well over 90 tiles in it. Adding more detail extends the life of the mold and adds a little variation.

#2, 4, 7, 10 in that order. Those are the ones that I think fit into the arts and crafts colors….

First #9 second #10 (with the right angle spotlight illumination, the 3D impact is vividly potrayed).

It depends on the look you want to acheive. For a wood look I pick #8, for a patina metal look, #10. So which one is the prize? Should I send you my mailing address for delivery??? They’re really nice.

7 is a very good A&C green
8 is also a very good color

I’ve always been a fan of the A&C potters, and I’d say #7 is the better of the two, but I’ve also got a predisposition towards the greens…

I think #9 has the best 3D effects, #10 is a close second, then #7. I know those three will look spectacular when framed!

Hi Dan;

This is ironic, considering my comment on your last post.

I would have to say somewhere between 1 & 10 for sure!

They all look good, it just depends what the background is as to how well it turns out. but for an absolute sequence of favorite colors, then I guess – 7, 3, 10, 9, 4, 2 least favorite 1 or 5 (they both look pretty flat to me)

Making a few simple shadowboxs frames for the tiles. butt joint, glue-and-brad. Quartersawn white oak with mission finishes and seedlac. Will post a few photos here and a project or two.
This one is called ”Bristlecone Pine”. Note the box sides are 1/2 wide w/ nicely figured Tiger oak. Heavy chamfers.
