starting the pigeon loft project. I have several pages of instructions printed out. I have had all the hardware for some time. I bought the lumber this week. I plan to paint each piece sides and ends so that it is weatherproof. I went out this evening to scope out a location. I had thought I wanted it next to the barn, but decided against that because I don’t want pigeons hanging out on the roof of the barn, so into the back yard it goes. The first step is to lay out foundation blocks in a four foot by eight foot square. Problem #1 is that there is no place in the yard that is 4’x8’ and is level, so I picked a “pretty” level spot and I think I will have to dig out a little bit under at least one, and maybe two of the blocks to make them level. I dragged a hog panel out to critter-proof the foundation. Instead of going right against the ground, the blocks will be on the panel. The panel will sink into the dirt very quickly and won’t be visible, but should keep large critters from digging in and around the loft and getting in to the birds. I plan to put a 6’ fence all around to keep other critters out. That should be a solid wood fence to make the birds less visible, but it might just be chain-link panels because they are easier to buy than to make.
