« Part 3: Woodworkers Olympics Part 4 of Random Thoughts and Ideas series Part 5: Things You'll Never Hear a Woodworker Say »

In the US, less than 1% of American are currently serving in its armed forces, and less than 5% of living Americans have ever served. Yet as I wander the halls of LJs checking out various projects, blogs, reviews, forums, etc it strikes me that a much larger percentage either are serving or have served in the armed forces.

My question then is how many of my fellow LJs are, or have, served. This question applies to my fellow LJs that are citizens of other countries.

I am further curious if there is a correlation. Woodworking to me requires an individual not afraid to try, try to learn, apply, fail, learn from failure, and try again until mastered, yet in some ways never be fully satisfied. Woodworking for me also allows me to apply logic in solving a problem (i.e. joinery) while also being creative. All of these aspects I find very similar to my military experience; despite common perceptions military life, particularly as you become a leader, requires logic and creativity.

Any thoughts on this, I will certainly fine interesting.

Thanks, to all that serve or have served.

I am very grateful, and thankful to all who has or is now serving our country. I, however, have never served. Back in my day, they would not take the last male in the family. I lost my only brother in 1969 to a drunk driver. He was U.S. Army. He died at 21 and never got to enjoy life. I was 14 at that time. Very traumatic at that age. I don’t ask for sympathy. His death is what kept me out of the draft back in Vietnam days, etc. I am not very proud of the fact that I didn’t serve, but, that’s how it was for me. GOD bless all of our Veterans, and their families. I thank you all for your service.

Wow! There are a couple of LJs who have served the country. I salute you all! I am proud to be here in LJ and hangout with great folks.
