With the 2012 Olympics in full swing the thought of a “Woodworkers Olympics” came to mind and from that thoughts on what the events might be.
Below is my list, you are welcome (encouraged even) to add your own. Some maybe serious, some silly.
-synchronized bandsaw box making (reindeer during the winter olympics)
-table saw kickback “shooting” (you stand to one side and try and hit an archery type target at various ranges)
-speed dust collection (see who can sweep/vacuum up a certain amount of sawdust)
-speed glue ups
-speed finishing
-team cabinet building
-precision marking
-tubafor contest
-scrub planning
-saw horse
-precision cutting – all saws

id add speed sharpening … additional points allowed for those with less than 10 fingers, deductions for losing a finger during a match.
Lumber ID
and while were at it .. whisky speed sipping (kind of like power walking)

One of just two women-only disciplines in the Woodworkers’ Olympic Games (the other is Synchronised Sanding), Rhythmic Dovetailing is a combination of gymnastics and woodcraft. Individual competitors perform short routines to music using hand tools – a marking knife, a dovetail saw, chisel and coloured ribbons.
Groups perform two routines, one with softwood and the other with hardwood and three ribbons. Scores are awarded in three categories: difficulty, artistry and execution.
It’s a joy to behold.

A decathlon where you have to make 10 different joints.
And the marathon is to make a Maloof Rocker. :)
HA! YorkshireStewart posted while I was typing – I would so enter Rhythmic Dovetailing!

Lets not forget the hand plane toss (during a fit of rage, of course), and of course the ever popular “freestyle cursing”...maybe even a “dropped chisel avoidance dance”, choreographed to music.

Modelled on slalom skiing, Big DIY Shed Slalom competitions consist of timed runs through a crowded Home Depot course with up to 25 checkouts and entrance gates. Red gates must be negotiated upstream, while green gates must be negotiated downstream of the surging crowds.
Touching a gate adds a two-second time penalty to the run; missing a gate results in a 50-second penalty. Knocking over a customer will result in elimination. The time taken to run the course in seconds is added to any penalties to give the overall score.
Within Big Shed Shed Slalom there are events for both trolleys and hand baskets. After each entrance gate, in trolley events, competitors must load up with a new length of two by four; in the hand basket event, competitors must choose an item from a different department each time & add it to their basket.
The Big DIY Shed Slalom competition will call for speed, control and precision, especially in the hazardous paint and varnish aisle.

How about a triathlon
1 plane 100 lf of 6/4 red oak
2 rip 100 lf 4/4 oak
3 26 mile run to ER
The medalist would be judged on time, the longest shaving, the accuracy of the rip cut, and the time and number of stitches

Woodworkers biatholon
-cut and assemble one project while finishing another with poly all in the same space
Judging could be quality of assembly, efficiency of cuts and the lack of dust in the finish.
