Stumpy Nubs recently posted a blog about some woodworkers on another site being all stiff and not having a sense of humor. One of the responders (SisQMArk) to this blog stated you had to have a sense of humor because of some of the terms we use. This got me thinking of other terms, or phrases, that we as woodworkers use that others unfamiliar with them woudl likely shake their heads in confusion or thinking “did he really just say what I think he said?” So here is a short list I’ve come up with, please feel free to add your own.
- Butt Joint (from SisQMark)
- Rub Tung Oil (from SisQMark)
- BLO (when pronounced as “blow”)
- Frog, Rabbet, Bench Dog, Dog – sounds like a petting zoo
- Half-Lap
- Feather board
- Board Foot – sound like your feet need some excitement
- Checked – sound like we’re playing Chess
- Rip

Let’s not forget everyone’s favorite step in finishing – “rubbing out”. Yeah, that’s totally not suggestive at all.

Here’s a thought, if I put a tongue in a groove is it wrong? You would think it would be wrong to grind your wood, stain it & rub it out with steel wool wouldn’t you? We all love to put a good screw in a pocket hole now & then, It makes us happy! Oh & some of us wish we had a good stick of ebony in our drawers instead of the pine one we now own. LOL!! All in good fun. I hope no one is offended, humor is my only intent. Cheers!!
