Mysterious bench plane.

I picked up this bench plane (after bargaining) for $10 at our local antique store. It has no makings. The iron has no markings. The unusual lever cap has no markings. It is 1/2 inch shorter then a Stanley 5 but has the same width. The knob is small, smaller then any I have seen. it measures 1 1/2 inches in diameter and is 1 13/16 inches high.
The iron is 2 inches wide (as expected).

Help me identify it. Here are some pictures.

Update March 6, 2016: Work, SWMBO, DWMBW and other projects got in the way. Finally git back to it this week end. The biggest obstacle was removing the knob bolt. I though I had the screw turning when it sheared off. But that tells more of the story. Apparently the original bolt had been replaced with 1/4-24 bolt machine screw and consequently the screw hole has been re-tapped. I will replace it with a new machine screw. I have all the parts cleaned up now I am waiting for paint and stain to dry. Spent a long time flattening the frog and lapping the sole. Longest I have ever spent on those operations. Pictures will follow later.

Sargent made, either as a Fulton, or as a Hercules.

My guess was Sargent made. It would be my first Sargent bench plane if it is. I'll start cleaning it up.

I've never seen a Sargent with that type of cap, or that type of tote bolt, or that type of cutter adjuster.

For the record I added your post from the other thread where this started here.
t's interesting. I think it's a Defiance Jack. Defiance made that type of cap to, they just didn't put it on a jack and I don't think they put it on a 2" plane.

The adjuster is different as well.

- Don W
You are probably correct in this assessment.

Given that our local population is predominately from Finland could this plane be related to the one shown in this
patent link.

Note: I have a tote bolt with brass end. Switch out to a Sargent lever cap. I might have a run-of-the-mill lever cap. Can toss all the above into a small box, and send it your way….if you want.

If you still have the tote bolt I will take it. I think the only reason to have retrieve this plane was because of its lever cap, so I will decline you moist generous offer of a Sargent lever cap. (Besides I have an extra too.)

I have all the parts cleaned up now I am waiting for paint and stain to dry. Spent a long time flattening the frog and lapping the sole. Longest I have ever spent on those operations. Pictures will follow later.

It is as if the plane was cobbled together out of various different planes parts or a cast of a plane or something There are no markings on any part. Indeed mysterious. Does the replacement of the knob screw with a machine screw mean it was so beloved it needed that repair or does it mean something else.

Included above a progress photo.

But I had an epiphany. I sharpened up the iron and took placed iron, cap iron, and lever cap into a Stanley 5 and could not adjust it to get shavings. Then "light bulb"

Don W wrote:

I think it's a Defiance Jack. Defiance made that type of cap to, they just didn't put it on a jack and I don't think they put it on a 2" plane.
I then compared irons, iron cap, and lever caps, Stanley 5 versus this mysterious plane. Indeed they are to small for a # 5. I put all into a #3 and voila shavings were made. So now I have a restored unbranded plane with the wrong iron, iron cap and lever cap. So what should I do now? Suggestions please!

Sounds from the update, you won't be needing this Stanley threaded tote bolt. Is the adjuster wheel a LH or RH thread? If you want a brass replacement…....

I think you can either do the allthread for the tote bolt…or…go out to a hardware store, and buy a 6" oval head bolt. The head looks just like a wood screw's head. The 0-7 I just rehabbed uses those type of bolts..

You might even find a Non-phillips headed one.
