My Italian Box - Part 1 - 7 replies
A lot of you guys salvage all kinds of wood and reuse it to build some very nice projects. My wife and I are having the countertops in our kitchen replaced with granite. When at the “granite store” I saw this box that had a few pieces of Italian tile in it. Asked the salesman if I could have it and he said yes. I’m guessing...

Precision - Woodworkers vs Electricians - 40 replies
Let me start out by saying if there are any electricians in the audience that are also woodworkers please take this critique with an open mind. I just finished replacing three light switches with timers and here are my comments:1. Breaker panels leave a lot of room for improvement when it comes to labeling.2. Wall outlet boxes sit cockeyed,...

Photography Studio - 28 replies
I just read a post by Todd Clippinger from about six years ago on how he sets up his photo shoots when taking pictures of his furniture. Pretty nice. I got to thinking about the projects I’ve seen on LJ’s. Background for the project pictures range from the driveway to some pretty elaborate background setups. I think some of you a...

Tablesaw fence/Router fence combo - 1 reply
As you can see I have my router table mounted to my tablesaw. It would be great if I could use my tablesaw fence (sometimes I do) as my router table fence, which would also include dust collection. A router spits out a lot of saw dust and I would like my tablesaw fence to have an opening that I could open and attach a hose to when routing. A ...

String Inlay - 10 replies
I really like string inlay and I build it into most of the boxes I make. Sometimes I’ll need just a piece of inlay and I’m too lazy to get out the jig I use to cut thin strips. As an example the box I’m currently building I only needed a couple of pieces to finish the job. I’ve marked a line on my throat plate th...

Basswood - 12 replies
Last time I was at the lumberyard I noticed a very white (light cream) piece of basswood. Normally I order small amounts of hollywood for my inlay. Holly is the whitest wood I have found. However, the basswood I bought comes pretty close. Close enough to use it in place of holly which is fairly expense. About the only thing I can use bass...

Question for the hobbyists.. - 28 replies
All you guys that do woodworking for a living have a jointer and planer, at least I think you do. For you hobbyists out there I have a question. When preparing for a project do you mill and prepare your lumber, count on s4s from the big box stores or just go with what you have and hope for the best? In the beginning I found it extremely diffi...

Need some explanation - 4 replies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk-vBWW7-Wo&sns=em The above video shows a person with a left tilt saw using the right side of his fence for rips. Why would someone do that? He does use a sled for his miter cuts. Is this common?

Exotic wood storage... - 9 replies
I keep all my cutoffs of expensive wood in a box (old drawer) that I may use for inlays and various other things. I keep it on the bottom shelf of my workbench and lift it out whenever I need it. I had some slides I recovered that were sitting doing nothing so I put them to work. Now I just pull out the box whenever I need a small piece of wood....

Pet Peeves - 114 replies
Just posted this on Mike1950’s thread but started thinking you guys also have pet peeves that would be interesting to hear about. I have been trying to get my 90 year old mom to use a bank card or credit card in checkout lines for years. Still have not convinced her. If you are a hobbyist you don’t need much. Watch Wood Working for Mere Mortals on YouTube. He can build anything and does not have the best tools. You just do not need high price stuff. Better yet work your way through the projects section of this site, find the type and style of woodworking you want to do and then look at that persons ...
