Update: Pictures still of the old Newport News Shop…now in Chesterfield (about hour + half north) and working hard in the shop to get it together. Pictures to follow once I get things more settled.
Ok, here it is. Not much….not much at all…in fact much too little…lol
But, it is all I have, and the house is for sale in an attempt to move closer to where I work and enough real estate for a new shop….hummmmm that sounds gooooooood! Anyway, for now this is where I’m at and for those of you who have read about my projects will get an idea what I’ve been talking about. First, I’m in a one car garage (duh) with washer, dryer, furnace, and water heater….there goes half the space. Just about all my equipment is on wheels except the craftsman work table and my drill press. To suvive it has to be that way. I spend much of my time moving one piece out of the way to get to another. I also do a lot of tripping, bumping into things, and the ever dreaded….dropping that one thing you need off the back and out of reach….geeeez. So, I do have to be particularly careful about safety while working, and so far no injuries to speak of. Equipment: Powermatic 64 TS, Jet 14” bandsaw w/6”riser, Dewalt 13” planner, Dewalt 12” compound miter saw, Jet 12” disk sander, General Industries mortiser, a really crappy router table (Wolf I think), Clarke 16” floor model drill press, Jet 6” jointer, and lots of hand and air tools. I’ve tried to buy my equipment carefully and have to think of space as well. Read lots of reviews and comments from woodworkers like you guys to make my decisions. Honestly, I very happy to finally be doing something I’ve waited for years to be able to do, but in here it can be frustrating. I’m keeping faith that this will be the year to move and start doing something about that new shop. So, if you have a small shop like mine I’ll commiserate with you and you can commiserate with me. If you have a nice big shop….please feel sorry for me :>)

It’s nice to know that you get to do a load of clothes while sawing and cutting wood.
Great little shop. I’m a couple of hundrend miles north of you come up for a visit.

As I was viewing your pics, I thought it was amazing how clean you keep your shop! Then I saw the pic of the laundry, and that explained it all…
Don’t feel bad about a small shop…everyone’s got their own challenges, and some poor LJ’s have to work out in their driveways!

Karson: OH MY GOD!!! I could put my whole house in your shop….both floors…LOL Maybe someday I’ll come by and drool!!! And, yes…I’m often tending laudry while woodworking….lol Actually, usually tripping over that along with everything else [GRIN]
Damocles: LOL, yeah I just completed my semi-annual cleaning….pull everything out in the driveway and clean away. Figured it was a good time to take pics….won’t stay this way for long.

Critter…I’d never let my wife put all that white rectangular looking appliances, (I’m not familiar with what they are for) in my workshop. You are a saint. Karson eluded to something to do with laundry? I’m baffled, but, oh well. Nice tools!

Jim, It is a good use of space. I can see how tripping over something could be a problem. In my small shop I to rely on wheels on tools, course lately I find them sitting around cause I don’t have a stand for them. But working on that.
One other question, where are all the other LumberJocks’s from Virginia? There has got to be some around here. Good luck on the selling of the house and finding a nice workshop and house.

Here in Virginia! 5 to 6 hours west in the mountains
Nice small shop layout. Good quality time sharing it with the wife or are you in charge of the laundry too?
My wife won’t let me get near her new laundry appliances. (Who-wee!!)

Hi guys, thanks for the words of encouragement…fact is I’d like to say I love my shop, but that would be a big lie. I hate the darn thing, too small, trip hazards, and extention cords running every which way, but it’s home…for now. House been on the market for a year and a half now with no takers, the market is terrible, but eventually I’ll get out of here…I hope. I do love my tools though, lots of research on the internet and magazines before I buy anything has payed off well. And, I’m not sure where all the Virginia woodworkers are, I know there are a lot of woodworkers here though, met a bunch at last years Woodworks show in Richmond. Guess this year I need to wear a Lumberjocks T-Shirt at the show to advertise the site ;>)

Hi Jim,
I apologize for just now getting around to looking at your shop. To tell you the truth when I first saw it I wondered if my wife had been in there and “organized” you shop. :) She arranges mine like this all the time. It does make for an organized shop but if you want to get to a tool invariably you have to move two or three others out of the way. I feel your pain with respect to the water heater and washer/dryer. But you are making efficient use of your limited space. And you have some nice tools to play with as well.
