    Hi Craig
You are definitly right about taking longer to sand than to carve.
Once I have my pieces blocked out I use a dremel with a 60 grit sanding cylinder to get down to where I want the carving to be. Then I use a small flat disc with a velco backing on a dremel tool I don't remember the exact name of it. It is about a 100 grit. After using this for what seems like forever I start hand sanding. I usually start at about 150 and work down to about 220. I don't know about everyone else but after i do this I wet the whole piece. My grand father taught me this. For some reason especially with Mahogany all of the pours of the wood open up. If there are still rough patches I repeat until it is all smooth.
    Craig I hope this helps.
