I have had numerous requests for a how to blog about my dyeing techniques.
I use water base aniline dyes. This technique the dye is applied using 20 cent sponge brushes and cheap paper towels. I typically work from the darkest colors to the lightest, creating layers of color.
This piece is turned from fiddle back maple. My apologies for not taking a photograph prior to applying any dyes.
The first coat is black. I apply the dye liberally inside and out. I then wipe the outside with a...

After admiring the double and double-double dovetail joints that are capable with the Incra and other jigs, I started thinking, “Why not try this by hand?” So this box is my first experiment with handcut double dovetails. It took me some time to figure out the joinery process, but once I realized a few things about this type of joint, it seemed do-able. It was quite challenging but also a ton of fun. It also does take some degree of patience and precision…which I’m still working on.

“Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.” ...Henry Ford (1863-1947)
As we near the holidays it’s time to start planning ahead for gifts that will be made in the woodworking shop. In the picture you can see many wood segments that have been cut on the dedicated miter sled for the table saw. It’s quite important that the angles of the segments are consistent so that they line up tightly within the decorative wood pattern. H...

How to use a KerfmakerOk, many asked me this question, and I have seen it again and again on LJ.
If you need to find out how to make one, you can see my Kerfmaker 'Brass'n wood'.
I’ll try to explain, as well as I can, feel free to ask questions if I do not make myself clear (I’m only human):
Collect what is needed, in this case a base stock and two thinner side stocks, and of course a Kerfmaker.(The pipe and matches are optional, and I must warn against smoking…).

Hi everyone. Here is the method for making the Impossible II. Before we start I didn’t take any photos during the build for this one. I needed to concentrate full time on it and taking pics can be distracting. The CAD drawings provided here should do the job . I’ve seen Steve (spalm) use this sort of thing to great effect. I’m not giving exact sizes, you can scale things off of the pics. This will give you the angles too, mostly 60°.
First the complete pattern
You ...

Degoose showed us how to make the jig that uses a bandsaw to make the spiral sections of his “Lazy Larry”.
Well I made the jig, but my old small bandsaw just wasn’t up to the task. I wasn’t about to quit, so I decided to try to make a jig that I could use with my router. It took me awhile to figure it out (using Sketchup), but once I did, it was rather easy to make the jig.
Here is how to make the jig.

1. Cut a 3/4” thick piece of MDF ...

Part 3updated 1/15/12
Regarding size:Size and proportions are important…to a point. We will be building a box that will start out at 11 1/8 W x 7 D x 4 1/2 H. (After shaping it will finish out at about 3 7/8’’ 10 3/4’’ x 6 3/4’’ x depending on how much shaping is done.)
I like the proportions of this box, they just look good to my eye. They are loosely based on the Golden Ratio which is a ratio of 1.618. There is much more to it than that, but simply put, here is how it works in rela...
