no previous part Part 1 of Totem Carving series no next part

I have recently, for the most part, usually (!), been keeping busy with running my household, driving kids in circles for extra-curricular activities, fiber crafts (crochet, spinning) and trying to learn how to sew in order to create garb for our new SCA hobby, but I have also managed to find a little time to doodle with some wood carving.

This is my current work in process. I had this stick, some unidentified hardwood. I had no plan, but it is turning out to a piece resembling native American carvings. I am not native American, so this is not representative of any particular people, I’m simply reproducing animals in a generic style that is reminiscent of old native artwork. The stick is about 20” long and has the diameter, of, say, a US quarter.

Here’s what I have so far -

(part of the fish ... bear…. eagle – the eagle is the top)

(wolf)

(fish… wolf … snake)

(top of carving, eagle … bear… fish… wolf)

I am handcarving this with exacto craft knives, and am hoping to, once done, sanded, and possibly oiled or finished somehow (??? not sure about this part) to create a nice leather strap, or beaded weaving, and make a wall hanging of it.

(edit – now with photos unscrambled!)

Coming along nicely.

And when you finish this one, go out and find yourself a piece about 5’ long (and maybe just a tad thicker) and start on a walking stick!

I have several pieces that I’ve trimmed off of our black walnut trees, some with some interesting vine twists, that are waiting for inspiration to hit.

Very nice. I’m a big fan of sticks, canes and such. I have a bundle of vine twisted walking sticks in the shop waiting for me to do something with. Winters coming (I think) so maybe it’s time to get to whittlin’. Please post the final when you decide on what to finish it with.
