Off to a rough but beautiful start.
I am a HUGE mountain biker, more than huge, I love it. It's a passion. I had an entire extra space attached to my 2 car garage just to store and maintain my bikes. However, a few major broken bones and a pregger wifey and I decided to start doing another hobby and cut back on my 5 day a week riding. I am sure you can guess what hobby I have chosen. That "bike room" has been in the conversion process of becoming a wood shop, pushing my bike equipment to the main garage and onto another work bench. Did I mention I have a wife whose eggo is preggo?
I started gathering tools and wood for the coming year or so of not leaving the house. Geez, people just give away scraps on craigslist! I now have so much practice/scrap wood it is daunting. While searching the CL I found a millwork company closing their doors. For retirement reasons and not financial, so its a good story! The guy had 400 board foot of Honduran Mahogany, 200 bf of 2" wide and 150 bf of 6" wide and 100 bf of 8" wide. No price listed, but I figured I send him an email. Thinking he would say 16-20$ a bf I had my doubts. 3 days later, in which I had given up on the thought, he wrote back says $1.00 a bf. Yes, ONE DOLLAR. I got my truck and picked it up! Here is what a future strip plank boat, and desk will be made of.
Now, I wanted some Walnut for another project. I found a guy with a mill in Nederland, CO. If you ever come to the Boulder area, go check out the Ned. It has a hand carved wooden carousel. Pretty damn impressive.
Anyway, he sold me milled Walnut to my specs for $8.00 a bf. Holy crap, its it my birthday? Its $10.00 a bf for rough sawn around here. $240.00 for the stock to make a Maloof inspried low back. AHHH!!! WHAT AM I IN FOR??
My wifey's due date is 2 weeks from now. So I drove up to Ned to pick the wood on my lunch break. Once 10 miles down a dirt road at the Mill I finally get service to my phone again. 10 text messages and 4 voicemails. Basically in a nice way I was being told to get my tush to the hospital. Crap! The hospital is in Littleton and thats the Denver Metro area, no where near my current location. Go thing I am a decent driver. 45 minutes and 65 miles later I was at the hospital. Mind you, Nederland is in the mountains and its majorly 2 lane canyon roads. I couldnt see the speed limit signs to know what they were
I am home now. Standing in the doorway of the "shop". Which is under major construction with things just laying everywhere. Arg, If I can just get some sleep and the wife comforable I might just get to organize this pig sty. And maybe, just maybe I can get to my projects…
Stay tuned for photos of my potential building.
