Off to a rough but beautiful start.

I am a HUGE mountain biker, more than huge, I love it. It's a passion. I had an entire extra space attached to my 2 car garage just to store and maintain my bikes. However, a few major broken bones and a pregger wifey and I decided to start doing another hobby and cut back on my 5 day a week riding. I am sure you can guess what hobby I have chosen. That "bike room" has been in the conversion process of becoming a wood shop, pushing my bike equipment to the main garage and onto another work bench. Did I mention I have a wife whose eggo is preggo? :)

I started gathering tools and wood for the coming year or so of not leaving the house. Geez, people just give away scraps on craigslist! I now have so much practice/scrap wood it is daunting. While searching the CL I found a millwork company closing their doors. For retirement reasons and not financial, so its a good story! The guy had 400 board foot of Honduran Mahogany, 200 bf of 2" wide and 150 bf of 6" wide and 100 bf of 8" wide. No price listed, but I figured I send him an email. Thinking he would say 16-20$ a bf I had my doubts. 3 days later, in which I had given up on the thought, he wrote back says $1.00 a bf. Yes, ONE DOLLAR. I got my truck and picked it up! Here is what a future strip plank boat, and desk will be made of.

Now, I wanted some Walnut for another project. I found a guy with a mill in Nederland, CO. If you ever come to the Boulder area, go check out the Ned. It has a hand carved wooden carousel. Pretty damn impressive.

Anyway, he sold me milled Walnut to my specs for $8.00 a bf. Holy crap, its it my birthday? Its $10.00 a bf for rough sawn around here. $240.00 for the stock to make a Maloof inspried low back. AHHH!!! WHAT AM I IN FOR??

My wifey's due date is 2 weeks from now. So I drove up to Ned to pick the wood on my lunch break. Once 10 miles down a dirt road at the Mill I finally get service to my phone again. 10 text messages and 4 voicemails. Basically in a nice way :) I was being told to get my tush to the hospital. Crap! The hospital is in Littleton and thats the Denver Metro area, no where near my current location. Go thing I am a decent driver. 45 minutes and 65 miles later I was at the hospital. Mind you, Nederland is in the mountains and its majorly 2 lane canyon roads. I couldnt see the speed limit signs to know what they were :)

I am home now. Standing in the doorway of the "shop". Which is under major construction with things just laying everywhere. Arg, If I can just get some sleep and the wife comforable I might just get to organize this pig sty. And maybe, just maybe I can get to my projects…

Mountain biking and woodwork are almost in the same class as the baby and mother, but not quite. Congratulations on the new addition, and hope the family does well. Thank you for sharing.

It's 2:30 am, why not cut a coopered seat

The lil bugger Crosby got me up at 2:30, which was expected. I just couldn't fall back asleep. So I went to the garage and did about 3 hours of work on my Charles Brock Maloof inspired low back chair. It's nice to know that the noise of the tools do not travel through to the house. Woohoo.

This was my first time beveling to any degree on a jointer. I kinda cut one of the boards shorter in width and had to make other boards a bit wider than what the plans called for. But in the end, I have a coopered seat roughed out to 20" wide and thats what the plans wanted. So I think I am still in the clear so far. There was a knick in the blade of my jointer right close to the fence, once I noticed it I moved the fence to pass over the knick. Then ran the board back through and by the time I had it square and smooth it was shorter in width :-(

Next step is the biscuits and carving the pomel. Gonna make a mock up out of 2Ă—4s to get the biscuits correct.

My mom bought a sail boat over last summer and the door to the cabin broke. My brother in law made a door out of some kind of cement board. It didnt last long. So I got the cement board doors in the mail. Now they are made of teak.

Some wood and a grinder.

So, I broke my arm June 1st. Double compound fracture. Awesome.

Today I could hold onto the grinder with control though! Armed with a 60 grit flap disc and a corded Bosch grinder, I went bananaananananas. Only spent 3 hours doing it because I couldn't handle any more dust in the air and being 6'3", bending over for 3 hours kinda sucks.

Advice desired: Squaring seat basin edge.

Hey there LumberJockians!

Im building a low back dining chair that I will pair with a desk.

I got my booty bucket carved out. I used a grinder with a flap disk. Lots of dust, but also lots of future wood filler. Since I used a grinder all the edges are round and smooth. I am wanting a more clean line with a drastic initial curve into the basin. I hope that makes sense.

Anybody have suggestions on how to make my chair look more like the "standard" basin?

Does this seem to be the best way?

I am not a pro chair maker so take my thoughts with a little salt. I have made a lot of Winsor chairs. It looks as though you have made a squared seat, it should be it's widest at the front, extend the lines closer to the front legs, do not use too sharp of a line into the basin would you want to set on something with a sharp edge ? Think of the shape of the object that you wish to put into it. Look at the second picture you posted, the seat is wide at the front the shape is rounded with a sloping drop into the seat. Good luck and have fun with it.
PS; I used a grinder with a sanding disc to carve mine out, changing grits as I went, then finishing with a ROS.
