My book for new handplane users

In April, I published a book based on the classes I teach at Woodcraft on using and restoring handplanes. The book is entitled Choosing and Using Handplanes: All You Need to Know to Get Started Planing by Hand. It's a good resource for beginning handplane users but it also has tables and reference information more experienced users will find helpful.

The book, which runs to 90 pages and has nearly 100 color illustrations, covers the following topics:

- The types of handplanes, their names and functions
- The first planes you should get
- How to set up and adjust your planes
- How to sharpen your plane blades
- The kinds of sharpening stones
- The different bevels you'll want on your blades
- How to hold your work for planing
- The body positions that work best
- How to determine the direction to plane boards
- How to plane cupped, bowed, and twisted boards
- How to plane end grain
- How to buy and restore old planes
- How to store and care for your planes
- Sources of new and used handplanes
- How to solve handplane problems

You can order the book from www.cobblermtnpress.com, Amazon.com or Highland Woodworking.

If you read the book, I'd love to hear your reactions and I hope there will be some reviews posted for others to see.

Mastering Woodworking Shows

Today I filmed two shows for Charles Neil's Mastering Woodworking webcast. The shows cover the waterfront, from the types of planes and how they're used, to planing technique, to restoring an old handplane. If you are a subscriber to the Mastering Woodworking shows, expect to see these broadcasts this week and next. If you aren't a subscriber, the shows are an excellent way to learn woodworking and a lot of fun to watch, so you might consider subscribing. The website address is www.cn-woodworking.com.

Second Mastering Woodworking Show is On-Line

The second of the two shows I filmed for Charles Neil's Mastering Woodworking show aired today. In the first show I discussed the types of handplanes and showed a bit of technique for using planes to flatten wood. In this week's show, I demonstrate shooting the ends of boards with a shooting board, including mitered edges using a donkey's ear shooting board. Then I take an old Stanley plane through the restoration process to show how easily it can be done.

If you aren't a subscriber to Mastering Woodworking (or even if you are!), all the techniques I discuss in the show-including how to build the shooting boards for yourself-are laid out in my book, Choosing and Using Handplanes, which is available from Amazon. If you are new to using handplanes, I think you'll find it instructive and helpful.
