Hardwood Edging on Counter Tops - Pre or Post laminate? - 11 replies

When building counter tops with hardwood edging, I’ve read where it says to put the edging on first then apply the laminate then trim as usual. Does it have to be done this way? I was thinking I would glue down the laminate first then the hardwood. Wouldn’t this allow the hardwood to hide the edges of the laminate? BTW, I’...

Squaring a Biesemeyer Fence - 16 replies

Does anyone know how to square a Biesemeyer Fence to the table? I was doing some cleaning and inspecting this evening in the shop. One of the quick checks that I did was to put my square on the table and fence and to my surprise, the fence isn’t quite perpendicular to the table. The fence is parallel to the miter slot just not square to...

Saw Blade Sharpening Services - 11 replies

Where to do y’all get your blades sharpened? I don’t have any place local that sharpens but there is a place that will send it off to be sharpened. I tried this once and about fell over at the price. I hit a nail in a 2×4 last week with my cir. saw and then proceeded to attempt to cut my clamp in two. Needless to say, it ain...

Laminate / Formica - 14 replies

I called my local lumber yard today for a price on a 4×8 sheet of laminate. I wanted a solid color and I about had a heart attack when he told me the price. I asked him if it were made out of gold. He didn’t think that was too funny. Maybe my expectations are too high. I expect to have to pay a little more here in the small town...

Spreading Contact Cement - 28 replies

How do you all spread contact cement for laminating Formica / plastic laminate? I’ve tried a couple different methods and not really happy with any technique. I’ve used a paint brush, works well but you ruin a paint brush in the process and I’ve tried to squeegee it around. I’ve seen the guys on This Old House use a J-...

Table Saw Sled? - 8 replies

Table saw sleds seem to be very popular in the woodworking zines and I see bigike just posted his sled. Now I’ve never used a sled so what’s the advantage over just using the miter gauge? Is this something that’s a must have and I’m just woefully ignorant of the benefits to using a sled? Thanks, Chunk

Chisel Suggestions - 30 replies

I’m looking for some suggestions for an average set of chisels. I’m not much of a hand tool guy but I don’t want to buy junk that won’t stay sharp and I also don’t need the best of the best. I’ve got some mortise and tenon work that I won’t (edit: want to) do this winter and I need a set of chisels. ...

Hollow Grinding - 4 replies

Being a power tool kind of guy and not much into the hand tools, I’ve not much experience with sharping tools. So … I have a 8” bench top Wilton Grinder. Is this too big for Hollow Grinding chisels? I’ve seen videos of this being done but with much smaller grinders. I got some projects on the list that will require ...

Base for an older PC Circular Saw - 8 replies

I have an older Porter Cable circular saw that has always treated me well. Unfortunately I can’t say the same how I’ve treated her over the years. I’ve dropped her so many times that I shouldn’t be aloud around her any more. The base is no longer flat or square, nor does it run true with a straight edge (no longer para...

Cordless tool storage shelf / cabinet / ? - 6 replies

I purchased a Milwaukee 0928-29 28-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless 4-Tool Combo Kit and I need a much better way of storing the tools other than the bag they give. I don’t get the whole bag concept, it offers 0 protection for your tools and fills up rapidly with saw dust. I would like to build some sort of storage and charging shelf / cabin...
