Bottle Holder progress

Last weekend I got 2 coats of linseed oil applied to the bottle holder and last night I got 3 coats of shellac applied. Tomorrow I will give it a light sanding and then 2 more coats of shellac.

I like this picture because it shows how much color and warmth the oil added to the hickory.

Wood from the Past

My Grandma has been cleaning out her garage and the garage that was Grandpa’s shop and has found several boards for me. I went by last night and picked them up, the biggest of the boards was this Cedar 2×10 that is 8’ long. I wire brushed a lot of the dirt off the board but then I needed to plane the rough sawn board to get a look at the wood.

Here is the stack of the other boards, it’s a mix of walnut and cedar with maybe a few other types of wood in there. I am brainstorming for a project to build with this for Grandma.

Hickory Bottle Balancer

I had a chunk of hickory I had milled from a piece of firewood and a friend has a birthday coming up, so I thought I would try to make a wine bottle holder. I still need to sand it a little more and finish it. But I had to try it out last night after cutting the hole in it. I am going to give it a coat of BLO and then will probably apply some shellac.

Marking Gauge #1: Getting started

While sorting through the free wood I picked up last week I had the idea to make marking gauge and set a few pieces of walnut aside for it. I cut out the marking gauge with the band saw and then planed the faces smooth.

I used a drill and cleared most the waste before chiseling out the mortise for the beam to go through.

It needs a little fine tuning on the fit. I am going to have to make sure that the beam is square with both faces

I plan on using a xacto knife blade instead of the marking pin a lot of older marking gauges use.

Turns out Brandon (LJ Member bhog) and myself don’t live very far apart. He mentioned to me that he was cleaning up his shop and offered me some cherry and walnut scraps.

So I went by his place after work last night. It was great to meet him, and I am thrilled to have some new material to work with. Thanks Brandon.

Not only did he give me a the scraps, he also gave me these nice cherry boards.

and this walnut board.

Over the weekend I got my jointer which used to be my grandpa’s out of storage, it’s a 1978 Craftsman. It has some light surface rust and I am sure the blades could use sharpened.

Great Grandpa's Tool Box

Over the weekend I got my Great Grandpa’s tool box. It has 2 wooden planes in it, and 4 saws. 2 of the saws were his, one of them was his dad’s and one was my grandpa’s.

One of the planes has “Boston Navy Yard Oct 1870” stamped into the side of it.
The other plane is a Scioto Works plane that from a quick search through the internet looks to have been made between 1893 and 1907.
