While in Texas last week I called fellow LJ GaryK and asked if I could come by and see his shop. He graciously consented so away I went.

His shop is about 5 times larger than mine and well equipped. I must say that the time I spent in his shop was one of the best days I have had in a while. We talked about his tools and he spent time to show me how to set them up to work to very close tolerances. He pulled out his wood samples box (beautiful box) and we spent at least an hour just talking about wood. His storage areas are filled with exotic woods.

Gary’s projects and tutorials have been an inspiration to me for a long time. When Gary posted his Pie Crust Table, I started collecting router bits to give this a try. We spent some time talking about the way I was thinking about approach this project.

The inspirations are endless. Included on my must build are the following GaryK projects.

Like most of us he has more than one project started. Everything I have ever dreamed of building he has built or is in the process of building. What a pleasure to see the find details in these projects.

Gary showed me his new project but asked me to keep it a secret. I will say this; once again his wood working genus will shine through. Gary you have been an inspiration to me and I am sure most of the LJ community. Keep the challenges coming!

Thanks John (Chips)

John, I am sure both of you came out winners with this visit. Like you I have always found Gary to have a great deal of insight and resourcefulness and he is a fountain of wisdom. Visiting him is an opportunity that any of us would enjoy experiencing.

John, you are very lucky to see him. It is always my dream to get the best knowledge in real world face to face with my teacher. GaryK is one of my teachers that I wish to meet in person.
God bless to both of you.

Everybody should try to visit some Lumberjocks on their travels. I have yet to be disappointed in meeting a fellow LJ. You meet one of the best, John. Glad you guys had a nice visit.

God Bless

Wow, thanks for the trip report. I have only been a member here for a short while, not even a half a year yet, and Gary has left me in awe with his end grain cutting board. I don’t have much time on here between work and work but I will certainly take a closer look at all of Gary’s blog and projects now, or as soon as I can get some time to. Once again thanks for the post.

Getting to meet and visit with a master is a fantastic thing. Watching them work is like poetry in motion. Your next several projects will bring Gary’s lessons to your work. I have added David’s lessons to my projects and I remember tips and tricks every time I go to the shop, and you will too.

John, If you’re ever back in E Texas give me a shout. I’m about 20 min. North of Gary.
