Hibbing High School (The Castle in the Wilderness)

Hi Lumberjocks!

This is the High school that I got my first formal training in woodworking.

This video shows the most popular features of the school.

It’s too bad it doesn’t show the fabulous woodworking shops. They had every tool plus industrial sized machines.

It didn’t only have woodworking, but Machine shop, Welding, blacksmith, sheet metal, electricity, foundry, Drafting,

& Aeronautics. That’s about all I can think of now.

I just thought of some other classes, You can’t ignore the girls.

They had some very impressive home economics like sewing, cooking.

Years ago they had classes starting from Kindergarten thru Junior College.

Things have changed since then.

When my Father first came to Hibbing he worked for the contractor that did the excavating for the Swimming pool & gym addition.

We hope you enjoy this tour!

He is self taught in Chinese (Mandarin). He has given a lot of thought about how he could help people learn about the language, so he wrote this book.
He has spent several years of research & study working on this book.

I have just added some of Nathan’s videos. http://www.youtube.com/user/kneehowdy/videos?view=0

I’ll be posting it when it’s completed

I had to get this new lathe, because I have some larger wood from a Black Walnut I had to have taken down in our

yard.

I’d like to make some larger things with the wood. I couldn’t let it go to the chipper!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Addendum:
I dwelled on wether to buy a new lathe at age 80, but I remembered my 90 year old neighbor. He painted his stucco house all by himself at that age, so I said to myself, “GO FOR IT”!
A WOODTURNED RECIPE HOLDER EASEL. (CS1 Kitchen Challenge)
This is not a brand new project. I submitted it, because of a request by MsDebbieP for the CS1 Kitchen challenge.
I was out in the shop one day, & thought to myself, what can I make?
I said, how about making a recipe holder easel for Barb’s kitchen.
So I dug out some pieces of wood from my scrap bin, & proceeded with the project.
I didn’t have a plan, but I knew what I wanted it to look like,
so the first thing I made was the main spindle post.
Then I made the base. I kept at it until I had the finished product.
The material is Pine from my scrap bin.
I used Walnut Watco Danish Oil Finish.
The base is 6 inches, total height is 18 inches, & the easel is 8 inches wide.
Here are some different views of it.
The spindles of the easel are made to match the spindles in the door panel above the kitchen range.
The other day, a friend of ours requested this recipe of Barb’s Calico Beans.
She always made these when we went on a picnic, or potluck dinner.
We were really impressed by the request, because the person who asked about the recipe
hadn’t been in touch with it for about 20 years, but he still remembered how good it tasted.
SOME MIRACULOUS NEWS ABOUT MY HEALTH!
About nine months ago, I had my semi-annual physical,
& I had an increase in my white blood cells,
so my Doctor made an appointment with an oncologist.
The oncologist took a bone marrow biopsy,
& the results showed that I have Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia, (CLL).
They call CLL the friendly cancer. Many people live a long life with this condition.
He then set me up for a CT scan of my lungs,
& abdomen to see what could be causing my problem.
The scan showed some enlarged Lymph nodes in my stomach, but the
biggest surprise was a growth in my left lung.
So I had to have another CT scan for a biopsy in my lung.
The biopsy showed negative cancer cells,
but they say that with a needle biopsy , a cancer cell can be missed.
My doctor compared this to poking a needle into a blueberry pie, you can miss the berries.
After that, I had to have an Arthroscopic ultrasound of my stomach, entering through my
mouth. They took a biopsy which also showed no cancer.
My oncologist then recommended that I have a CT scan every 3 months in order to keep a watch on it.
Three months ago I was told that I had Mesothelioma,
which is considered a terminal disease.
A person usually lives only about a year after being diagnosed with this.
My oncologist said he wouldn’t do any chemo-therapy,
because I was feeling so good. He said chemo would make me very sick.
He decided to wait, & keep an eye on it, & have another CT scan in 3
months.
The last scan showed that the mass in my lung had shrunk to about half
its size, so he told me I don’t have cancer, because cancer never shrinks,
unless you’re taking chemo, or radiation.
The Doctor couldn’t explain the reason for this, but sometimes this happens.
He jokingly asked if I had gone to another doctor for chemo-therapy,
but then he said it must be Barb’s home cooking.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Barb, & I know that our prayers were answered.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’d also like to say that I haven’t felt ill in all of this time, since the discovery of my malady.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TO TOP IT ALL OFF!

I had cataract surgery a few weeks ago,

& I’m having an eye exam this Friday, so i can get a new prescription.

It’s real hard doing this typing when I can’t see very well yet.

I’m hoping the new glasses correct this problem.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WE”VE BEEN PUTTING OFF SHARING THIS ABOUT MY HEALTH,
UNTIL WE GOT THIS GOOD NEWS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WE FEEL A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE SHARING THIS NOW.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BARB, & I ARE THRILLED, & LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR FUTURE YEARS TOGETHER!!
Building our own washer, dryer pedestals. #3: FINALLY DONE AND WASHING CLOTHES ( Edited 02/05/2011)
I thought it was about time I posted the completed project.
With help from my Son we grunted the machines up in place.
They look good, & work real well. The pedestals are good, & solid.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It’s sure nice not to have to bend over to load, & unload now.

I edited this on 02/05/2011

I changed to stationary non-swivel casters, but after that I had the problem of them slipping side to side on the smooth floor during the spin startup.

You’ll notice I laid down some foam cushion interlocking floor tile, & now it doesn’t move
anymore.

Now I get a little wobble during spin startup, which is normal even when the machine is installed on

a floor, but after it reaches full speed it purrs like a kitten.

The machine has never moved out of position on the pedestals after a full year of use.

It’s so nice to be able to move the machine in, & out with such ease.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Here’s a picture of them in place.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~View looking behind the machines. I made the pedestals a little longer than the machines,
to make clearance for the vent pipe, & hoses when I push them in against the wall.
Notice the foam cushion bumper against the wall

I’ve been poking along with this project, fitting it in with other chores around the house.

It seems like as a person gets older, it takes more time to get anything done, but it gradually gets done..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After attaching the side panels, I glued in a piece of foam pad as a silencer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To stretch my plywood, plus protect the ply edges, I glued on some Brazilian Cherry flooring for edging to the top.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I decided to face off the fronts with the Brazilian Cherry.
The oil sure brought out the beauty of the Birch plywood, although it’s going to be covered up by the machines _
Now as soon as the other piece is completed, I’ll need some help lifting the machines onto the pedestals._
Building our own washer, dryer pedestals. #1: Cutting out parts, & starting assembly.
We recently purchased a new washer, & dryer,
& we didn’t want to spend $400 for the factory pedestals, so I’m making my own.
They should cost us about $75
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the factory made pedestal

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The front load machines are kind of low without a pedestal.
It makes it kind of tough on the back muscles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m building them with 2X4s, & 3/4 birch plywood.

Some pictures of the progress. After cutting the frame piece to proper length, I cut the half lap joints with the bandsaw

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All of the frame pieces, ready for assembly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gluing, & clamping frame.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I used my Kreg pocket hole jig to fasten the frame uprights.
The plywood skin is to be glued, & nailed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adding casters.

The factory pedestals don’t have casters, but I thought it would be nicer for maintaning the machines.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was very disgusted yesterday after cutting the plywood to the sizes I needed.
The plywood plies separated right down the center plies on one cut. I ended up spending some extra time injecting some glue, & clamping it. so I could use it.
I think I’ll go down to Lowes, & complain about this.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
To be continued.
My garage has only a 7’ ceiling, so I pulled out the ceiling joists, & added 2 X 4s with 9” plywood gussets to the rafters to accommodate 9” R-30 insulation. I did this in my existing shop about 18 years ago. I had a small bubble type skylight leftover from the other shop that I hadn’t used, so I installed it in
this ceiling. For such a small opening, 14 1/2” X 14 1/2” it sure give out a lot of light.
I searched for this type, but they don’t make them anymore.
The company now only makes the Tubular type skylights.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
