I just made this comment on another blog, but I think the other blog has been all wrung out, so I’m resubmitting it here.

I’m not sure if everyone realizes, but each member of this forum has friends, or family that frequent this site. So maybe he isn’t contributing with talk, but he’s contributing a multitude of viewers from the outside.
I think the main reason I joined this site was to show projects I’ve done over my years of woodworking, & being that I don’t sell things, I’m able to show the things that I’m proud of to others. I also liked the unique way Martin set it up so you can show more than one view of your project. For some things such as carvings, one view is not enough.
As for making comments, I think the ones who blog seem to be the ones doing the most comments. This forum is the first place I’ve had the experience of any kind of blog. I didn’t even know what a blog was. I do notice that after blogging myself, that I’ve been more outgoing on my comments.

PS: Maybe we should eliminate the competitiveness of all the activities of our members. What do the rest of you think ? My personal feelings are to eliminate activity ratings, ”we should all be equal.”

I think this is turning into a chat room, and I, for one, am heading out to the shop.

I still like the “word count” idea.

WHat is life without competition? Heaven.

To quote the Talking Heads… “Heaven is place where nothing happens.” Not sure if I like, or agree with sentiment, but it provokes a thought that too much of anything (yes, even chocolate) can be too much. Also, living in the western world, (despite having studied martial arts) I have a hard time picturing a world where everything is equal much beyond democracy.

I see nothing wrong with a little friendly (and fair) competition here… might be one of the things that brings in more visitors. Having access to a project gallery has focused me to be a better woodworker, having the contests is like a semi-annual reminder to do the best work I can.

I’m all for the word count idea, otherwise I’ll have no chance at ever cracking the top 4! Debbie got there in a few weeks. (way to go!) And No, I’m not just being active to make it to the top… I think most of us are here to see and be seen. Nothing wrong with that.

If we’re asking if we should distinguish active from inactive members, There’s 12 of us on the front page… and we’re keeping ourselves active for sure. After some thought, that’s enough for me.

I’m not into competition and don’t see the point of competing for who wrote the most words—HOWEVER —it makes me chuckle to listen to the banter about who has a higher word count and who has made it to the top of the active members etc. I think it is like hanging out in the shop with a bunch of friends joking around and teasing each other. Has it anything to do with woodworking? No but it does have to do with “community” and that is what a blogger’s site is all about (that and the basic sharing of information.) and that is just my wee little Candian two-cents.

Isn’t a society where everyone is equal Socialism? This is a consumer based world where supply and demand still dictate cost unless you own an oil well or 40.

Competition is a good thing when it causes you to strive to be better.

And work count means nothing to me. If you can get a point across with 25 words or less, why waste the breath. Nuff said.

I have a friend who blogs on another woodworking site. His moniker is ‘Two Words”. And that’s what he does. Every one of his posts is composed of two words. Now, he’s a very clever guy, but you would be impressed at just how much me can say in just two words.

I write my blog because I enjoy writing. I post comments to a forum topic when I feel I have something to offer. I couldn’t care less about whether or not I’m the LJ with the most blog entries or if I’m indicated as one of the “most active” LJs.

There are phases in my life where I’m going to have more “down” time (winter or if I’m taking pain pills for lower back problems or what have you) and phases when I’m going to have more shop time (spring, summer, fall, days before a deadline, that sort of thing).

One might think my LJ activity would be higher during my down time, but I have a feeling I’ll actually be more active on LumberJocks when I have more shop time. The reasoning behind that is because I think the more I have going on in the shop, the more I’ll have to write about.

So hopefully my blogging activity will steadily increase in the up-and-coming months. If it does, that means I’m more active in the shop and have more to share and questions to ask.

Hope it does Ethan, I look forward to your posts.
Oh, and see a chiropractor if you can (or if you need to) I’m bucking a multi-generational history of back surgery (and six months of rehab) on my fathers side.

I’ve noticed, (or I think I have anyhow) that Mark seems to “show up and post in bursts”. I know we notice, and miss him when he’s gone, and when he posts, we get caught up with how much he has going on!

I should be in the shop more… but with my wife’s recovery, and be having my own back issues this weekend (note to self, daughter is getting bigger and heavier) my weekend plans took a backseat. Nearly had a bunch of great projects (mostly quick and fun little ones) to share… at least I know what I’m going to try to fit in next weekend!

Oh, and Debbie, with the conversion rates, you can throw in a little more than 2 cents… like 2 and a haypenny :)
