CARPENTER ANT DAMAGE TO OUR GAZEBO SHED ROOF #1: Discovery of the Damage, Demolishing old roof, & Rebuilding

no previous part Part 1 of CARPENTER ANT DAMAGE TO OUR GAZEBO SHED ROOF series Part 2: This is the completed new shed roof. »

I opened the shed door the other day, & discovered water on the floor.

I had just made a new shed door about a year ago.
Click for details
I thought the wind had blown water in from under the door.

Then I noticed sawdust on the floor with drip marks coming from above.

I looked up, & saw some funny looking white stuff coating the ceiling up in the corner above the

door. The top plate of the wall studs also had piles of sawdust on it, & ants galore!

Right away I knew I had some work cut out for me.

  • GOOD OLD CARPENTER ANTS!
    A close up view!

As long as There was so much damage, I decided to tear down, & rebuild the whole roof.

I also changed the roof to a gable end, instead of the old shanty style.

I tried the best I could to blend it into the Gazebo roof.

This project has taken quite a bit of my time, for past couple of weeks.

But all in all it’s been kind of fun.

Nice fix Dick!!!
THAT should last for a while!
That’s some pretty fancy editing on the computer too!

Those ants will know better then to mess with you from here on out!

That’s quite a groovin’ slideshow!

Looks like a fun project and that will make an aesthetic improvement on the shed.

What program are you guys using for the slideshow? That was a cool transition.

Wow they sure did a number on the lumber. Did I hear you correctly that they did this much damage in one year? They must have worked thru the winter to meet there schedule…..
Great job by the way, you guys sure are adept at the computer and camera technology.

Dick Nice job on the rebuild. I bet you are glad that it wasn’t the cabin that had that kind of damage.

Dick, every picture change on the slide show was the same. It gets a little monotonous, you need to change the transitions to keep us interested. (Just my take)

I’m sure glad Termites can’t survive our climate.
Carpenter ants are enough.

Great job Dick, you are one groovy old guy. Loved the music to go with the pics. Great build, you made it look pretty easy. I’ve had problems with carpenter ants, how do you get rid of them? I’ve heard of a product you lay down a bead around your house, then spray WD-40 over it that keeps them away, have you ever heard of such a thing? You are a computer whiz to boot. m

Thanks Mike!

I just bought some Ant spray, & I haven’t seen one since.

I think the music reminds me of Ants running around.

Nasty little critters. We have what we call “white ants” (actually termites) down here. There are a real curse. can destroy a house without even being detected. they will eat all the wood on the inside & leave a thin outside skin. you don’t even know they are there.

Thank you Grumpy!

These Ants like moisture, the water got in through a roof leak.

I didn’t know it was leaking, but the Ants found the leak.

After working around the Ants all day, I can feel them crawling on me at night. :(

Not sure about the Master of none Dick. you are pretty good with the camera as well.
Here’s the down under critter, looks harmless enough

But this is what they build after demolishing trees (& houses if they get in the way)

Those are some ghostly looking critters Grumpy.

I wouldn’t have room in my yard for one of those castles. :(
