Last Project of the year - 2008 Tile Box

Hey all,

Just finished this box as a gift for the in-laws. Someone had given them this Motawi Tile a few years ago and it has been siting on their kitchen stove for a few years so as I was wrapping the garage shop up for the year I thought I would make a little present for them. The box is designed from a project in “WOOD” magazine back in November 2006. It is Quarter Sawn White oak and Red oak. (I was using scraps laying around.) I feel like I rushed the finish and left some errors but I am not that conscerned about it. This was my first box and I learned my table saw blade is out of square with the table because the miters were tough to get right. I ended up also adding a “Spline”, not sure if right term, to the mitered ends. I built a jig to hold the top verticle on the table saw and slice a slot out of each corner and inserted a glued piece to stregthen up the miters. This was also a first.

Fun project and now everything is cleaned, waxed, and covered until spring. Man I wish I had a heated shop that did not have to house my wife’s and my cars.

Thanks,

Third Project Ever - Mission Plant Stands

They are QSRO and I just kind of winged the design. I am not happy with the finish. They appear blochy to me. Currently I believe that finishing is the area I really need to improve on. I hate spending so much work and then finish them like junk. I did make these right around the time I made the cabinets and first table so I have grown since then.

Here are some pictures. As you can see I actually made four of these I just have never assembled the other two. I will take my time and finish and sand the next too much better.

Latest Project - Fumed Oak Table

I just finished this table last week. It is a QSWO table that I decided to do a fumed finish on. The table is all mortice and tennon and through mortice and tennon construction. This is my first attempt at making the legs quarter sawn on all four sides by shop veneering them. Also a first with the fuming process. I fumed it with 29% Industrial ammonia for 26 hours in the tent pictured. I then used a dye to even out the color, followed by thinned amber shellac, and then wipe on poly.

The table is a larger version of my first project. The top is 28” by 45”.

Second Project Ever 2006-2007

I started building these cabinets in 2006 but actually finished in 2008. (Trim and Crown) I wanted to update an old room in my house for a home office. I am a big White Sox fan so I decided to theme the room around my memoribilia collection.

Learned a lot on this project. I also did this as a learning tool to build all new kitchen cabinets.

Thanks for all the nice comments folks. I added a third picture of the panels between the book cases. (I also did the oil painting as well) another first.

First Project Ever 2006

I built this in 2006. It was the first woodworking project I ever attempted. It was made using flat and QS Red Oak. I did not have a jointer or plainer back then so I made the whole thing using just my table saw. The top was rough sawn QSRO so I had to find a person with a jointer and planer to prepair the wood. It is full of erros and visual marks of a rookie woodworker but you have to start somewhere. All mortice and tennon and through mortice and tennon construction.
