Cutting the mortises

So I am out walking the mall and I like to go in the furniture stores and check out the different styles. I came across a valet. I had never seen one before but the purpose was cool and the piece seems real easy. If you have never seen one they are all over google images.

As I do this build I thought I would doment it in a series since I plan on using nothing but hand tools- thanks for looking

Shaping and fitting the base

The mortises were done so the next step was to shape the base. I cut the outline of the curves first with a saw then shaped with the spokeshave. It is so nice on endgraing when it is sharp. The end result is very smooth and the shavings chocolate shavings from a cake. It feels great when it is properly set up, it makes quick work of the curves, even on end grain

Then I cleaned the parts a bit with the number 6. Does a great job.

Next I cut the notches for the 2 cross rails, whoch I will join half lap. I like this type of joinery because it breaks up the routine M&T. I cut the notches with a saw and then chiseled out the waste. I then used the router plane to make the bottom dead flat.

Then I shaped the cross rails with the spokeshave.

Final fit of the half lap was done just by planing the ends off to a fit. So here is the base so far. I will continue to shape these parts to taste until I am ready to assemble.

Here is the first shot of the rails
