Food Safe Finishes For Turned Bowls

Greetings, I have been turning for less than a year and I have finally started to master the art of bowl turning. After a few bowls flying off the lathe…. A few blowing up… I have had a few now that have come off the lathe in one piece. My question the the Lumber Jock Nation is what is a good food safe finish for those wooden bowls that have survived? All comments and suggestions are welcomed!! Thanks!

What is your Favorite Tool?

Was working today in my workshop and I began to wonder what my favorite tool that I own/use. I began to wonder, I enjoy all of my tools, some more than others. I focused on my newest tool, my planer. I like it and the things that is allows me to do, but it is not my favorite tool. Than I began to think about my skill saw and how much I use it and what I use it for. Still not my favorite tool. Well as I was standing in the middle of my workshop I noticed what I was leaning on. My Jawhorse by Rockwell. This is by far my most favorite tool. Basically it is a floor clamp. It does not have a motor, or a switch, in fact it is power by…well me! I got it as a Fathers day gift last year. The more I use it the more things I find to use it with. So my question to all lumberjocks, what is your favorite tool in your shop? I am looking forward to your responses.

Sanding is for the Birds

I am new to LJ but not new to woodworking. I have been building and collecting the tools of the trade for about 7 years. I enjoy designing, than building, and finishing. The one thing that I truly do not enjoy doing is sanding. I have a palm sander, orbital sander, belt sander, oscillating edge/belt/spindle sander, and a hand sander. With all that cool equipment and my search to make it more enjoyable I have just ended up with more toys and dust. I am currently working on a loft bed for my daughter. It is the largest project to date, and the bigger the project the more sanding is needed. I guess least it keeps me out trouble with my wife!! Does anyone else think this way? If anyone has any tips or ideas please feel free to share.
