Copper Top Box

This is a High School graduation gift for my brother. Body of the box is cherry, keys are walnut as is the lid lining. The top panel is copper fumed with ammonia. The finish is wipe on poly followed by 100 minutes in a tanning bed. Yes, I just typed that. I was going to make a liner with dividers to go in it but I realized I don’t have a clue what he might put in it, so I’ll just put a gift card redeemable for whatever shape and size divider he might want.

Not much of a story here, I’ve seen a few different versions of these and decided to make my own. Maple and cherry. The cherry stripe is thicker than the maple so it’s slightly elevated when not resting on my pillow :)

Walnut Box

I had a few small pieces of walnut I needed to make something out of. They were the last few pieces from a walnut tree that got struck by lightning 30 years ago. Grandpa cut it down, used the lumber to have his kitchen cabinets built. Those burned in January along with the house. So I had these few pieces that weren’t big enough to do anything with concerning cabinets that he gave me. Still had charcoal that I had to cut around to get to the wood. Built a few cutting boards and this. Kind of odd looking but there you go.

I’ve done a few bandsaw boxes but this is the first mitered type box I’ve done. Design came from a book called “Making Great Boxes”. Still have to line the interior, but my navy blue flocking still hasn’t arrived.
