Board Game Table #3: Stools to match

The table is just high enough to not really fit any chairs and not really fit breakfast bar stools. So i decided to make my own stools.

Board Game Table #1: Making a table

So I finally started the project I had wanted to build for a while. A table just for playing board games. I had originally thought of making it 4 feet by 6 feet but found it would be way to huge, so i scaled down to 4 feet by 3 feet. I have no completed the side walls and surface of the table, even putting on a felt top and dying the side walls blue and yellow.

I have finally completed the case. What took so long was making each drawer. Because I am still new to woodworking I make little mistakes here and there. These mistakes made it impossible to cut out all the pieces for each drawer in uniform size. I had to custom size each drawer. I have none the less completed them all have moved all of my board games into the case, which fits perfectly. I am going on a road trip and will be bringing my new case with me. So the case will be getting a real test.

Board Game Travel Case #6: A trial run

Today I took my board game case out on a trial run. I learned a few things. People things it’s funny when you carry a large box around your neck and I need some handles. I also applied some magnetic paint and then a layer of chalk paint on the inside of the front board. I decided it being magnetic I can keep score sheets posted as well as write in chalk the score of the game. After the drying we put it through a test run and it works out great. I am excited for this project to be complete.

Board Game Travel Case #5: Back to the drawing board, again.

Well I had to go back and re design the case once again. I got a comment from Mark Shymanski asking if the boards to these games fit in the case. I of course went and got my board games to test the fit out and realized that a few of them where a bit larger then the case.

I had originally designed the case to have enough space between the closed drawers and the sliding front to fit large boards. But in the process of making the case I forgot about this detail. I decided I would go back and shorten the large middle drawers, which I had already decided to redesign in the middle of the process. (see my original design to see the difference) These drawers were very large to begin with so shortening them by 2 inches was not a big deal. I made more then enough room for several different boards to fit standing up in the space where these three middle drawers used to come out too. I like this design much better. The case seemed too straight and now has more character.

Luckily for me it was not too much work. I only have to disassemble one drawer and shorten it. Thankfully I had only made one of the middle drawers.

I spent the last couple of days building one drawer a day. I had the help of my mother with the cabinets for the drawers. I still have a lot of work to do. I am trying to drag it out as long as I can so that I don’t finish another project too fast.

Board Game Travel Case #3: Starting Over

I decided to go back and redo the exterior walls. I wanted to learn how to use my router anyways so I thought I should start here. I am not sure whats its call but I make grooves for the shelving units to fit into as well as the front face of the case. I was originally just going to have it set in place and clasp onto the front but thought it would look nice if it had a channel to rest into. The router works great and I think i got the hang of it. So far everything is coming out much nicer then I thought it would.

I also went back and redid my first drawer. I was originally going to do box joints on only the front but now have decided that it’s worth it to do it right the first time.

Board Game Travel Case #2: The exterior walls

I got a 8’ 1” x 10” board and cut 2-14” sections and 2-26 1/2” sections. I ripped one of the 26 1/2” boards 3” in to create the top lid. After nailing the pieces together I was about to work on getting proper dimensions for the interior drawers. I decided before finished the day off I would make a test drawer. I created the front, back and both walls. I then decided I would make them box joint together and it worked out very well, since it was my first attempt.

Board Game Travel Case #1: The Idea

As you may know I love board games. When I plan a board game night at someones else house I must find a large cardboard box and pack in 4 to 5 games boxes to take. So I thought I should create a case that can hold multiple games and pieces for easy transport. After looking at my ideas I have decided on this design.

I have decided on painting the case and tower blue and green. I chose a rather bright color because I love bright colors. I did not paint the inside bottom of the tray because I want to purchase some reflective tape and line the walls for easier viewing of the rolled dice.

I installed all the hardware and now it’s officially a box. The screws were a bit too long so i had to cut the ends off.

I have even put the dice tower to test, I have decided the walls for the catcher are too tall to see into. I am thinking about lining the walls of the tray with mirrors for easy view of the dice. Now I have to think about color.

Dice Tower #6: Not done yet

So after making the dice tower, I decided I was not finished. I wanted to build something to stop the dice from rolling too far out of the dice tower. So I started of with the idea of just making a tray but then thought why not make a box to hold the dice tower when not in use.

I went back to the drawing board, i.e. Sketchup, and designed a case to hold my new dice tower.

The best part is the lid could be used as a backboard for throwing the dice down the shoot.

I drew out all the cuts after I planed them out in Sketchup and then got to use my new bandsaw for the first time. Everything came out perfectly.

I decided I would glue all the pieces together instead of nailing them. I started off by gluing the randomizer and then measuring for the walls.

It did not take too long. I made sure to wait and hour for the glue to dry before I started on the walls but other then that it probably only took one hour.

After I had it all glued together I sanded it down and then got to testing it. The dice tower works great.

I am a big board game geek and because of that I have been trying to think of how to tie my new hobby of woodworking with the joy of playing board games.

I decided to make a simple dice tower. A dice tower helps you roll dice to ensure no cheating as well as keep the dice from falling off the table and away from knocking all the pieces off the board.

I found several ideas online and went from there. I decided for the randomizer inside the tower I would use 2×2 blocks cut into a spiral slide. I put everything together on in Sketchup, as I always do before building.

I then made sure I had all the dimensions and cuts all pre-planed out in the computer before I purchased the materials.

Future Projects #2: Board Game Table

I am a board game geek. I love board games, but not your monopoly or sorry. I play what is know as European board games. They are much more advanced and have deeper themes. These games have many pieces and need a lot of space to play. Because of this I have decided to look at some table that others have built and take what I like and make my own. So far these are the features I enjoy and I hope to be able to build this table for myself soon. I have put in a lot of nice touches such as dovetail corners and notches I would have to use my router for everything to nestle nicely together.

Garden Bench #1: Build Day 1

Today I started on my first project inside my new shed. It’s really is great to have a room filled with everything you need. I only have to turn around to grab my supplies. I began building a garden bench I designed for my mother in law. We picked up the wood and I got to it right away. Everything went so smooth inside the work shed that I completed the frame to the bench in only and hour and a half. It went fast because of the new shed and also because I learned house to use cutlist with my sketchup model. It makes everything so much easier. Tomorrow I will cut and put on the siding too the bench and then bring it over to her house for final construction.

I am still working with 2×4 and really cant wait to get back to making furniture. I want to build a dresser and try my hand at some of those dovetail joints. But this will do for now.
