As you may know I love board games. When I plan a board game night at someones else house I must find a large cardboard box and pack in 4 to 5 games boxes to take. So I thought I should create a case that can hold multiple games and pieces for easy transport. After looking at my ideas I have decided on this design.

Oh yeah Sketchup is a must. The best thing is once you learn sketchup you will then need to get the plugin called cutlist. Cutlist enables you to press a button and it prints a detailed list of all the materials needs and where to make all the cuts on our boards. It's a time and money saver. No more over or under estimating materials for me.

Is there space for the games' boards? Looks like a good design, it might be a nice way to store the myriad games the kids seem to collect even if were not travelling with them. Thanks for the idea.

You think I would have check before I made it. I just tested out all my games. Most of them don't have boards. Settlers and Carcassonne will fit in a single short drawer of their own. Other games like Ideology, Puerto Rico, and Pandemic's boards fit on the top shelf just fine. But then there are game like Ticket to Ride, Scotland Yard and 1960: The making of a president that just don't fit at all.
I have decided to cut back the middle drawers by 2 or 3 inches so the other board games can fit vertically in the case.
I got a 8' 1" x 10" board and cut 2-14" sections and 2-26 1/2" sections. I ripped one of the 26 1/2" boards 3" in to create the top lid. After nailing the pieces together I was about to work on getting proper dimensions for the interior drawers. I decided before finished the day off I would make a test drawer. I created the front, back and both walls. I then decided I would make them box joint together and it worked out very well, since it was my first attempt.

I decided to go back and redo the exterior walls. I wanted to learn how to use my router anyways so I thought I should start here. I am not sure whats its call but I make grooves for the shelving units to fit into as well as the front face of the case. I was originally just going to have it set in place and clasp onto the front but thought it would look nice if it had a channel to rest into. The router works great and I think i got the hang of it. So far everything is coming out much nicer then I thought it would.
I also went back and redid my first drawer. I was originally going to do box joints on only the front but now have decided that it's worth it to do it right the first time.
I spent the last couple of days building one drawer a day. I had the help of my mother with the cabinets for the drawers. I still have a lot of work to do. I am trying to drag it out as long as I can so that I don't finish another project too fast.
Well I had to go back and re design the case once again. I got a comment from Mark Shymanski asking if the boards to these games fit in the case. I of course went and got my board games to test the fit out and realized that a few of them where a bit larger then the case.
I had originally designed the case to have enough space between the closed drawers and the sliding front to fit large boards. But in the process of making the case I forgot about this detail. I decided I would go back and shorten the large middle drawers, which I had already decided to redesign in the middle of the process. (see my original design to see the difference) These drawers were very large to begin with so shortening them by 2 inches was not a big deal. I made more then enough room for several different boards to fit standing up in the space where these three middle drawers used to come out too. I like this design much better. The case seemed too straight and now has more character.
Luckily for me it was not too much work. I only have to disassemble one drawer and shorten it. Thankfully I had only made one of the middle drawers.

That's a nice mid project-redo. I used to be into a lot of those games but no one in my area plays them…and I rarely have enough time to woodwork let alone play Catan. I miss my Civilization board (my cousins got tired of me winning at Risk every time so we went for something a bit more complicated.)
How's the weight so far? It would be a drag to have it be too heavy to carry.
Today I took my board game case out on a trial run. I learned a few things. People things it's funny when you carry a large box around your neck and I need some handles. I also applied some magnetic paint and then a layer of chalk paint on the inside of the front board. I decided it being magnetic I can keep score sheets posted as well as write in chalk the score of the game. After the drying we put it through a test run and it works out great. I am excited for this project to be complete.

I have finally completed the case. What took so long was making each drawer. Because I am still new to woodworking I make little mistakes here and there. These mistakes made it impossible to cut out all the pieces for each drawer in uniform size. I had to custom size each drawer. I have none the less completed them all have moved all of my board games into the case, which fits perfectly. I am going on a road trip and will be bringing my new case with me. So the case will be getting a real test.
