Since I can’t work wood for a bit due to a minor operation, I thought I’d polish and wax the planes and hand saws. While they were out, I posed them for a team photo.

As I did, I realized how I’ve slowly replaced all of my older Stanleys with Veritas. The one remaining Stanley #4 has a crowned Hock iron and LN chipbreaker.

I had no idea that I had replaced all of older Stanleys except one!

The standard block plane, on the right of the group of three, is a $20 Craftsman that somehow keeps on hanging-in!

Very nice collection!

When you’re up to it, you should try to make your own plane.

From a guy with “Beech Pilot” in his screen name, I was expecting somewhat different planes. Looks like a great team to me.

Bevel-up smoother, low angle jack, scraping planes and spokeshaves, Oh My! …drool
Serious plane envy.

Before marrying at 40, I was enamored of the shooting sports, specifically target pistols.
The wife hasn’t much use for sidearms, and I moved away from the beautiful outdoor range in Topeka.
Seeing that much polished steel and wood together brings to mind the idea that I really ought to sell some of the arsenal for some new Veritas iron. Probably could even keep those in the house!

ooooOOOOOHHHHho planes, I love planes.

Long thin whispy shavings. I’ve measured them down to .0007 ouuuuuUUU planes.

They are soo cool and quiet and easy to clean up after.

Nice set.

I have a friend who spent a lot of money on these type of planes just to look good in his workshop tool cabinet he did the same with a huge range of japanese chisels and never from what I can see uses them. It’s nice to see someone who knows and apreciates proper hand tools, and I admire the set of tools you have shown.I have a lot of these hand tools myself “not perhaps quite as expensive ones as yours” but use them relatively often myself .I recently bought a number of German wooden hand planes which I like very much thanks for showing Alistair

Thanks, guys!

The biggest time savers in my shop are my hand tools. I can take a surface from the mechanical apprentices, the power saws, jointer, planer, or 80 grit drum sanding, directly to finish ready in seconds with only a few passes.

Can’t beat ‘em for fitting doors or joinery, either. Outside of a production environmenr, it’s far more pleasurable, much more recoverable, and faster than futzing a machine into perfection.

At the end of every session, they get blown out with compressed air and wiped with air tool oil ‘til next time.
